Oil ? 6 Years, 7 Months ago
I had this ? tagged on to another topic, decided to start a new thread.

I asked about Mobil 1 Extended Performance Full Synthetic 15/50.

It has the circle and says API Service SL/CF-it says nothing about energy saving.

It does have some other letters to the side they are:
ACEA,A3,B3/B4 API SL/CF

I have not done the oil yet, but if the weather is nice tomorrow I may do it on both Road Stars His & Hers with frilly seat stuff.

Since then I have been to Mobil 1 site, and they have a v twin specific oil.
I ck'd the data sheet and it said that this oil exceeded the API SH. I did note two things that were different that may make the difference. The Extended Perf. oil has some ash in it and the flash point of the oil is about 30 degrees C lower than the mobil motorcycle oil. The extended perf still has a flash point in the upper 400 degrees F without doing C to F conversion.
So I suspect that it will work fine and be superior to most other oils but Mobil does have a synthetic for the v twin so I guess I would use it if I knew where they sold it.

Now you've done it .... you've opened a can of worms.

You will find everyone has their own opinion. It's best to surf the Internet and read all you can re oils and make your own decisions.

My opinion ...

I've used motor oil all my riding life (and it's been loooong) 'cause I'm too cheap to buy the expensive motocycle oil, and when I did use it I found no advantage.

The oil companies are putting friction modifiers in automobile oils so avoid those types of oils as they will cause clutch slippage. These oils are usaully identified by the words "Energy Conserving" in the lower panel of the API label (the circle containing the oil grade).

That's my simple slant on oil ......

I called Mobil. The rep does not recommend using the mobil 1 extended performance motor oil because it does have the anti wear additives in it and it could cause probs with the clutch.

So now I need to bring the two gallons of oil back too Wally World and find another synth to use.

I gotta go with DOC on this. 35 yrs of riding and I've always used the same oil, Valvoline. In my Roadie I have 10-40. In my Guzzi it's straight 50 in the summer and 30 in Winter. I am a little excessive on my changes, usually every 1500 miles. The reports I have read highly suggest "Heavy Duty" oil for a number of very good reasons, I might try it next time. Type in "Motorcycle Oil" on Google to see these reports.
