Is this...I don't even want to say it? 4 Years, 9 Months ago
O.k. guys, I think I may have the dreaded curse. I just returned from a two week vacation and couldn't wait to ride yesterday. The bike started great and everything was good in my world until I pulled out of my driveway and she stumbled. I made it to the corner, where it tried to stall. I managed to keep it running and fought it around the corner. The bike backfired and sputtered, ran very rough at all rpms. After I rode the absolute piss out of it for a mile, it cleared up and didn't return. I rode it today and had none of the symptoms. The only difference is, I didn't use the choke today. SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME THAT THIS DOESN'T SOUND LIKE SVS. Thanks in advance!

Don't jump yet Bad gas maybe. Run a couple oz of Seafoam or Ringfree in 2 or 3 tanks and see if it clears up at all. What do your plugs look like. Sometimes motors just do weird things.

You may have had some water settle in the bottom of the carb bowel. Try draining the bowl after it has sit for a while and see if there is any water or trash in what you drain out.

Mine does the same thing sometimes. ('06 with 5000 mi) I thought it was just "cold natured" and not warmed up yet. It will pop and sputter for a few seconds then will run fine when up to temp. Is this begining stages of SVS and is it going to get progressively worse?

Mike,

I side with the water in the float bowl.

Look for the simple things first.

SVS is usually worse when the bike is cold.

One way to check is to use an upper end treatment. If it gets better after the treatment and returns later - yes, the beginnings of SVS.

When they put the pipes on what did they do to the carb?

The carb and airbox are stock. I put the pipes on and haven't changed the carb at all. It was doing the same thing with the stock exhaust also. It doesn't do it all the time. I never thought it was that big of a deal, it only coughs for a few seconds when cold then runs fine. Is there something I should do at this point?

Hmmm .... I don't think you have anything to worry about. It sounds like it just may be a cold engine.

The bike needs a bit of choke when first starting up/out. I may be that you're trying to be too aggressive when starting out.

Thanks Doc. That makes me feel better. The thing is only 3 months old and I have the 5 yr. unlimited mi. warranty on it so I'm not gonna worry about it at this point.

Sorry for the thread hijack Mike.

Post edited by: paulyray, at: 2007/08/03 19:39

As far as I know SVS is pretty steady. Once it's there it does it every time. No positive though. My bike likes to have the choke on the first click for 2 or 3 miles or it runs like crap. And I can't get on it until it's warm either. Shouldn't be getting on it until it's warmed up anyway so that doesn't bother me.
