Southern B.C. Trip 4 Years, 9 Months ago
Just got back late last night from a two day 700 mile trip through southern British Columbia. Weather was sweet, scenery beautiful, and an awesome Roadie to ride! Roadies were made for the mountain hills and hiways, with all that low end hill climbing torque! Awesome bike for mountain trips!
...And I managed to get as high as 70 Mpg, with an overall total average of 63 Mpg. (I don't think I'll bother messin with this stock carb setup )
I cruzed along with a '79 Honda CBX that averaged 58 Mpg, and an '82 Goldwing that averaged 53 Mpg.
The Roadie would outhandle the other two bikes, and I constantly found myself having to hold her back, as she just wanted me to grab another gear and keep givin' her more throttle. Yamaha did few things wrong when building the Roadie, but I think they di a lot of things right!

That's an unbelievable mpg!

.... and you're running a stock carb!

Yup, the only thing I did to the bike is remove the AIS and gut the stock pipes.
No carbon buildup in the pipes. No backfiring on decel at different altitudes either. I have thought about messing with the carb, but with these results, I think I will just leave it alone!
We checked the numbers again to be sure and kept meticulous records of our mileage and consumption on all three bikes. (The old Goldwing was packing a 393lb rider so it's mileage suffered a bit, Alex is huge for that bike!)
I never went faster than 62 Mph the whole trip, used the BrakeAway cruise control as much as possible, and avoided any fast takeoffs or WOT conditions. Both the old CBX and my Roadie used premium fuel the whole time, just to see what it would do.
I am very pleased with this Roadie, and it's economy!
We are using Imperial gallons measurement for the Mpg figures.
I usually get around 55 t0 58 Mpg on my local short trips.
I am not going to touch the carb on my bike until it falls off itself.
Would drilling out the PMS and doing a minor adjustment foul things up for me, Doc? (I wonder if I could go just a little richer on the low speed downtown riding.)

Why bother!

With your mileage, no problems, no detonation, power is good ... why would you want to touch it.

Doc, did you catch that, He says he,s not gonna touch the carb until it falls off on it's own, THEN, in the very next breath, he's asking you how to drill out the pilot jet.. I believe he's worse than me.. By the way, I went to your website this morning. Your bike is awesome, the big pic really shows it all. I love the wheels, they look like they'r turning sitting still..and the long tank really sets it off..very clean..

Thanks flash.

I've cleaned up my garage this summer so this winter I intend to finish what I started a few years ago.

Plus I have some new 'stuff' I'd like to do and I'm scrounging the internet for parts.

..... ..... ....Probably because I am just like every other HUMAN BEING on this planet....
If something works, then you just HAVE to screw with it somehow, just to get the temptation over with!

(Seriously, I don't think I'll touch the carb, Doc!) But this Roadie does prefer the premium gas for some reason....? )

Why do you say that?

What 'symptoms' do you get when you run regular?

The engine seems to be WAY smoother in town riding on premuim, especially on hot days. It revs up to speed smoother on the highway, and seems to have way more jam at the higher RPM's than on regular gas. It doesen't ping upon take off when it's hot. Regular gas seems to make it ping or knock heavily around town. And I find I get much better gas mileage with the premium. With the low compression, it does not make sense to use premium. But experience with this bike has shown me otherwise. ?? I dunno?

Re: Southern B.C.Trip - Hey Doc?!!! 4 Years, 9 Months ago
Hey Doc....?
The problem has been blown out of the water! It just so happens I was not told the 'full story' when I bought my "leftover stock from 2005" Roadie in 2006....
This Roadie was kind of "special" deal, in a way. (It hates regular gas for a good reason...)

Apparently the bike was going to be sold to a buyer that demanded that speedstar pistons be installed as part of the deal. The dealer had installed the pistons and new rings in the motor, as the guy had made a good hefty deposit promising to purchase it.
...Apparently the guy could not get financing, and the deal fell through.
Not knowing any of this, I purchased the bike at a steal of a price. But they wanted me to take THIS bike that was "in the crate" and not the floor model. It took them a whole week to prepare the bike for me to pick-up? (I wanted the floor display model, to take home that same day....?) What was up with that?
A week later, I went into pick up the bike. I remember the salesperson stressed that even though the owner's manual said regular gas is okay, they recommended that I use premuium gas in this bike to avoid problems with the engine....???
After prying and prying on the phone today, a year and a half later, it all makes sense, Finally.
They did not want to get into a warranty battle over this bike, as this brand-new motor had been apart to install the different pistons and rings.
This explains the oil stains on the cylinder gaskets and pushrod tubes that never leaked again after the second time I washed the bike.
It explains why the motor hates being lugged with regular gas around town.
And it explains why this bike prefers premium gas over regular gas. (One of the reasons I bought the Roadie is because it was suppoesed to run on cheaper regular gas!!! Unlike those darn new high compression fuel-injected HD's I was not interested in buying expensive fuel for
)
It makes me mad! Why didn't they just come out and be honest with me from the start? I would take them to court for being dishonest with me, but I have never had any mechanical issues with the bike requiring the "now expired" warranty, and I have been totally thrilled with it's performance, gas mileage, and incredible power.
They are lucky I am happy with the Roadie, or I'd write Yamaha Central a lengthy letter, sue the dealer's butts till the cows came home!!
At least I now know why the hell my Roadie won't run on regular gas.
Some people would sell icecubes to Eskimos if they could get away with it.
