There is still about 1/2 inch still sticking out, I have tried heat and two nuts locked down on it but I can't get the stub to budge, any advice would be appreciated.

Like Curt says. But mate while you've got that much sticking out you might want to try and set up a pilot hole in case you have to use a stud extractor later on. Drilling will also add some heat into the thread and might help budge it.
Make sure you've got a flat end on the stud grind it if necessary to achieve this. Make a centre punch mark in dead-center of the stud and then use a small drill to run your pilot hole into the stud checking as you go that the drill maintains position in center and is parallel with the stud.
Take it steady with pressure on the drill. You don't want to have a broken drill bit as well.
While the stud is fairly warm from the drilling spray with penetrating oil so that oil works into the thread. Now try what Curt suggests.
This is how I would approach it mate.

Had the same problem (but it broke flush with the head). One suggestion was to cut a slot in the stud then apply PB Blaster overnight. Anywho cost me $220 to have it fixed at a shop . Good luck.

+1 on the PB blaster, let it sit overnite, if you have it, tack weld the nut to the shaft and use an impact gun, start with the PB first, that stuff works wonders.

Weld a nut on it, as it's cooling spray PB Blaster on it, then get your impact wrench on it -start out at a low setting- and just let it hammer away at it for a few minutes. It will eventually start coming out.
The combination of heat, pb blaster as it's cooling (the cooling process will pull it into the threads better), and then work your impact wrench never fails.
I've even done this on the road with a mechanical impact (the one you run with a hammer), a pencil torch and WD40.
Good luck and stick with it.

If you do the welding thing, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY to protect the electrical system, learned the hard way on a car.
