Knocking in Tranny when bike is hot 01 R* Midnight 1 Year ago
I keep hearing a knocking noise in the tranny, when the bike is hot, but not running.

Here is the scenario, I roll the bike out cold no noise's Go for a ride 100 miles or so
come back park in the drive way, kill engine. Raise the garage door and push in , I hear a knocking in the tranny. I verified this with stethoscope. It is not the real wheel bearings. I have done 3 oil changes on this bike since I got it 21000 miles and now at almost 23000. Wanted to flush the bike with new oil since it had not been ridden for a few years. Current oil is Mobil 1 20/50 V-twin motorcycle oil. And there is no metal particles or debris in the oil. I strain it through Synthetic coffee filter.

The recall has not been done yet.

Also I am getting 47+ Mpg on Reg. gas with ethanol of course.

Any ideas, I searched and found nothing on either site.

Thanks,
Todd

Take it in for the recall if there is something wrong they should find it. I would hate to find out there is a problem in the middle of riding season.

I doubt they would find this, and if they did would they actually fix it. The tranny bearings are only $50 so if it needs them no problem. But it only does this after it is warmed up, not idling, it has to be driven.

If it's not running, then the only noise I can think of would be the metal cooling down.

it is definitely not metal cooling down, only does it while I am rolling it. It seems worse going forward then backward.

Loose front pulley? Just a thought.

I would make the recall a priority. If the circlip that causes the problem fails it's my understanding that it locks up the rear wheel. Not a pretty thought at 70+ mph.

I checked the pulley looks good and tight, and the bent washer is still in its original place. Never tampered with. I pulled the Pulley cover thinking that was it, but it looks good and the noise is coming form elsewhere.

Thanks for all the info, I will keep checking.

your number one priority is the recall... the dealer has to order the kit and that might take some time, so stop in and make an appointment asap.... you don't want your rear wheel locking up... and the sound could be the metal cooling down... just my opinion...

I was going to tell you to check the front pulley nut but you have done that so get the thing in for the recall asap.
