Exhaust Tones 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Well, I'm slowly making this R* my own. I've ported the intake. Added a K&N filter. Vented the cylinder to a seperate little filter mounted behind the rear cylinder. And have the PMS dialed in fairly good. With running the HK 3" I added the smart parts Hard kore baffles and have it toned down good. My delema is I would like the tone deeper. I had to drill 3 Ø.250 holes in the new baffles to cut the pressure back. That stopped the occasional popping in the carb. But I would like to build a baffle that's really deep toned instead of the two baffles per pipe I have now. Any ideas what might work. (No I can't afford different pipes yet. Plus I like the look of the HK's. [My sons suggestion] )

How much access do you have to machining tools, how experienced are you? (I'm out of my league.. I just have friends ) Anyway, I'd suggest experimenting with different muffling materials... I have a friend with a Harley Softail, V&H Big Shots, and custom baffles made by wrapping metal shavings (those long, spirally ones) around as the muffling material.. I have yet to hear a better sounding bike. So maybe experiment with some different materials that can take the heat. Good luck!

I've designed my own stuff in the past for cars. But I'm no muffler expert so I was,t sure where to start. I know Curt started experimenting about a year ago. But I'm not sure what he came up with. I'm a Quality Manager in a Steel Stamping plant. So access to material and others talents are also available.( Tool room made the floor board extenders!) So I was looking for ideas at this point!

Well I initially tried the Smart parts secondary baffles. Liked them but still was not the tone I wanted. This season I took them back out and inserted a 5 inch extension to move the original barrels back to just before the end caps. WOW! Has a cool tone and just a touch louder than with the extra barrels. So if you want a deeper tone in your HK's. Give it a try!

Curt designed a set of baffles (torque chambers) for my VH longshots yesterday. They sound GREAT! Talk to him, he can help you out.

The HK baffles are self contained.... in other words that are baffles inside an outer pipe inside again inside the heat shields. I found that by adding a 3" piece of car tail pipe the same diameter as the inside of the baffle to the end that is change the tone. It get rid of the tinny sound. I made Ryan some torque chambers yesterday and installed them on his V&H long shots. Just for fun I had a set of slash cut tip for my Bub Stubbies I stuck them up to the end and they made the sound much better. I have several baffles I have made for the HK's I used to have but none can come close to the sound of the Bub Stubbies with torque chambers. Here are some of the baffles I have made.
