This just my opinion - The dipstick is a joke. The hoops you have to jump through just to check the oil is a joke. The fact that Yami had to make a video to show how to check the oil proves what a joke the whole thing is. Adding / draining oil based on what the dipstick says is a mistake IMO. My procedure is - Drain, put on a new filter, put 4 qts in, and ride. I don't worry about what the stick says. Chances are it won't read where I think it should even though I know I have the right amount of oil in there. And for me anyway it's hard to get the same reading twice in a row. On my last oil change I drained a little over 4 qts. Put 4 qts back in and the oil was at the top of the hash marks. No reason for the level to be that far up on the stick unless the stick or procedure doesn't work.

Example - You say you just put in a little over 5 qts (1 qt Too much) but the stick is telling you it's OK by being right in the middle of the hash marks.

All just my opinion and I'm not telling anyone not to use the stick.

OK. I put my soap box away.

Have to say, I am with Musky on this one...I just did my oil yesterday...drained both holes, removed the filter...replace the drain plugs, new ST7317 (slightly longer filter) and 1 gallon of Shell RotellaT Synthetic (half in, fire it up for about 15 secs with dipstick screwed down, the other half in then)...and off I go...okay, I looked at the dipstick it was mid hash marks but truthfully as long as she wasn't leaking anywhere...no problemo

Hi Ted, I understand what your sayin, but at the same time, I know what I'm seeing.. I put 5+ qts in it and it shows half up the stick.. I too have a larger than stock filter and I can figure it holds about a pint more than stock..not knocking anyone here, but I like to see some oil on the dipstick.

Can't disagree with you; maybe you got a bigger oil pan or something. I can tell you there was talk here about Yamaha recommending 3.5 or 3.8 quarts to prevent SVS...all I know is I use 4qts and go...you have to do what's right for you and your bike

Flashback, you don't want that "extra" quart in there. And yes, the dipsticks at Yamaha that designed these dipsticks for our bikes should fired. I here that the M109 crowd has similar issues. But, as long as she ain't leaking or burning any oil, 4 quarts should do it for you. BB

Well You guys have pretty much convinced me that I only need 4 qts.. so I guess I'll drain off some this afternoon, I just took a morning ride around 285 (for those of you who are not familiar with atl. its about a 65 mile loop around the city and usually a parking lot on any other day.. ) so the engine is still nice and hot..I't just going to be mentally challenging for me not to be able to "see" my oil..maybe I can make the dipstick longer
By the way BB, I hope your enjoying the dyna 3000. I have a speedstar but its not adjustable like the dyna..
