High pitch whine on deacceleration 3 Years, 1 Month ago
Anybody had this problem?
When Im cruising along, then let off of the throttle, I get a high pitch squeak. Its just a little chirp.
Then when my wife is on the bike with me, its a high pitch whine when I deaccelerate. But if I pull in the clutch, it goes away. "The noise, not my wife" The sound is coming from either the tranny or clutch "I think".
I have a 2003 Midnight Star. And it had the tranny recall. So it has been redone as far as that goes. My wife weighs 140 and I weigh 170, so its not like its a lot of rider weight. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Roto

The chirp is probably coming from the belt as it passes over the front pully. Its pretty common as they start to wear. Most HD dealers carry belt dressing you can use to test this out. You apply to the belt tooth face then just go out and ride. Its essentially the same stuff Auto Parts stores carry for getting rid of auto belt squeaks.

If you think this might be it, you might want to try tightening the belt a little. Squeaking is usually a sign of the belt being too loose, if it can be resolved without replacing the belt.

I ended up replacing mine. No amount of adjusting would fix it, and it got to the point where it was driving me out of my gourd.

I replaced it with a Dayco Panther, which never made any type of noise whatsoever.

Thanks Gram, I'll go buy some belt dressing tomorrow and try it out. I hope that cures the problem.
I'll let you know either way. ROTO

Well sorry for taking so long Gram. Between the belt dressing and tightening the belt just a little bit, I'm back on the road again with no noise. Thanks a million. Roto
