Transmission oil 4 Years, 11 Months ago
|

I'm not trying to start a debate here but I've not seen anyone mentioning this before....
My mechanic says that it's OK to use the AmsOil 20/50 synthetic m/c oil in the transmission too. This theory is also supported by AmsOil. (about half way down the page at this link) http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/mcv.aspx.
I have been running mine like this for about 4,000 miles and the tranny is quiet, smooth and easy shifting. Are there any other AmsOil users doing the same?? I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

It says on the Amsoil site- " Not recommended where an API GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil is required"

Engine oil is not equivalent to hypoid gear oil.
Hypoid gear oil contains extreme pressure and antiwear additives to reduce the sliding friction of the gears. Granted there are no transmission gears inside the transfer case but the two gears, chain and especially the shaft are under tremendous loads.
Even if you did not use hypoid gear oil, 50 W is too thin.

You're welcome. I've done the same kind of thing before. Read the good part but don't keep going to the end.

Without going overboard here I'll just say Amsoil is awesome. all there m/c engine oil has the shear stability of tranny fliud because our bikes engine oil is used inside the tranny as well. I've heard of a few guys running that in there trannies(harleys) too.
Thats why v-twin oil is not for our bikes cause it's not meant for the stress of trannys. v-twin is designed for harleys, and s&s motors where the transmission is seperate, with it's own oil.

Post edited by: 102inch, at: 2007/07/02 19:21

Well, I found out that they did not put the 20/50 in my transfer case at the break in. Even though they said they would at the time I dropped off the bike, it appears that they double checked the spec sheet before dumping in in. I made them pull up the service record for me so I could see what they did put in. They uses a non-synthetic SAE-80 GL5. "Gear Saver" or something like that. Got 80/90 synthetic in it so all should be good now.........I hope.
Thanks to all for your input and opinions!!

Good advice. The fluid temperature gets right up there, and the shearing loads on those gears would make short work of any non-GL4 or 5 hypoid fluids. With regard to cost, I've done well with the Coastal hypoids from Auto Zone at $1.79 a quart. Mobil I synthetic is around eight bucks for the same quantity, but sometimes I think it's mind over matter.
