Steering head and swing arm bearings 1 Year, 2 Months ago
The owners manual calls for repack every 16,000 miles. I am at 38,000 miles and as far as I know it has never been done. How important is it, and how difficult is it to do? Would like to not pay the dealer if I can do it myself. Instructions would be appreciated.

I would definately check the steering head bearings as the grease does wash out on occassion.

The process for getting access to the bearings is in the service manual.

When I had my Virago. A Friend mentioned to use Marine Grease on the steering. Said it washes away slower. Tried it and it worked great. Can be picked up at any boat store that does repairs. Not much more expensive either than the regular grease and it held up a lot longer.
