02 Road * starting problem 3 Years, 1 Month ago
Hello everyone I appear to be having a problem and hope that someone here will be able to help. I have left winterizing my 2002 Silverado until the last minute. Last year I rode until mid December but this year the snow is staying and the salt is already down. So I went out to try and start the bike to warm the synthetic oil up for its oil change and received a whirring noise from the starter. What it sounds like is the starter is turning but the engine is not engaging or turning over.

First thought was the battery ( which is origianl) had given up the ghost. I was looking for the quick fix and due to the fact the battery is 4 years old I beleived that it was the culprit. Well.. it wasnt. New battery fully charged same result. Now a motorcycle mechanic friend of mine suggetsed I post here and see if others have had issues with the starter or starter clutch. Anyone having any experiences like this let me know. I do recall towards the end of the season that the bike was having a little trouble starting but I beleived that it was the battery. Seemed like the starter was slipping in retrospect so I beleive it is the starter clutch.

Thanks

Mike

Starter bolt has backed off. It has been a problem for quite a few folks. Need to lap the components for a better fit and reassembled. Some retaining fluid would help as well. Yamaha has a service bulletin on this problem.

Hi Mike,
What Pat said. I had the same problem with my "01. It's not a hard thing to fix. If you go over to the Roadstar Riders forum and do a search, there should be a link to a step by step process. I'm at work right now, and don't have the ability to get on the delphi forums from here. Basically, you need to pull off the front pipe, stator cover, lap the tapered shaft that the stator rides on, clean and dry the stator bolt real good, apply some loctite to the bolt, re-assemble, and let it sit over night to allow the loctite to cure. The torque on the stator bolt is like around 110 foot lbs. so it's handy to have someone help you hold on while you torque it back on.

Hi Mike,
I found the link I was thinking about this morning.
http://weislake.com/sig/mucker/starterfix.pdf
will pretty much get you back on the road again. It's not a difficult job.
