Weird. Very weird. I once thought my coils were going bad due to popping and backfiring, but it turned out I had a jetting problem. I see you've got aftermarket pipes, but a stock air cleaner. Checked it lately? Baffled. Got me.

You wouldn't think that it would come back if they did the work they stated on the invoice. Maybe you've got a "lemon".

PS, I love black tape.

Don't mention the "L" word. I've been thinking that since the first time it went bad. Unfortunately if it's the same issue I have to have it happen one more time to use Ohio's lemon law on it. And by then it will be stored for deep snow!

P.S. Agree on that. Just distracting when you don't type real good!

Re:Question on power loss 4 Years, 9 Months ago
Well al here's the update! Dealer checked all the electrical when I stopped in. Everything checked fine. So we started the testing on the engine as Yama requested. First running the Ringfree through then a blow by test needs to be done. Funny thing was Yama service rep said the Ring free should be run through every 4,000 miles to clean the op of the valves. I never read that anywhere in the users or service manual. Neither did the Dealer . But to appease the Big "Y" I agreed. SO I get to be the test dummy. Dealer and I figured I would run the tank out quicker than anypne from their shop. (They all live within 10 miles of work. I'm at 40 miles from work.) Guess this makes me a (Temporary) Service Technician. (That's who "Y" says is supposed to do all the work.) Figured If I take the long way home tonight I can drop off the bike in the morning to get the other work done! Maybe it won't take a week to get it fixed this time!!

Geee .... I wonder why it's not in the user's manual .... or maybe posted as a bike spec on the website.

"Must use Ring Free to keep bike running properly".

They should have stuck with the 1600 .... they had it ironed out. Unfortunately, the Japanese like to tinker and change things every 4 years to keep things 'fresh' .... new customers. I believe that this time they screwed it up and won't admit it.

It will be interesting to see what the new model series will bring ..... if there is another model series. If they do continure, I can't see them sticking with the current motor.

...... but, but ......

The 04-05's were especially bad but that's a relative term. I don't have any stats to compare the number running OK and the number affected, only the number of complaints on the forums. We do know that there was a change to the heads in 06.

Don't worry, be happy. I'm sure you can get lots of trouble-free miles on yours. If it does happen you'll know what it is and how to get results.

The 1700 seems to be partial to SVS but that does not mean all of them are eventually afflicted. However, once they get SVS it causes lots of problems for the corporation and if you were that corporation would you not change something to lessen the cost.

One question on this. DSEWARD said that he had the problem show up after his 4000 mile checkup? Does that mean he only has 4000 miles on it? I've got an '06 with 11,500 miles, and my trouble started around the 9500 mile mark.

As a further note, I've only put about 300 miles on the bike since I got it out of the shop after the "SVS" repair. Now, if they did the fix properly, is it possible for the problem to return?

Post edited by: russdustus, at: 2007/08/31 09:05

That's just it. It seems to come at different times for different people. But I expect that's related to the different tolerances that different engines have.

Will it return ..... anything is possible but it seems that once Yamaha does their magic, everything is back as it should be. I think you should have miles of trouble-free riding from the SVS perspective .... unless you're running real rich .... but then any bike would have problems with fouling.

16,247 miles - no SVS. I suppose I should feel grateful for that.
