I'm a negative person if it was me I couldn't help but feel they broke it removing it or dropped it and now expect me to pay for it . At the least I would ask to inspect the part and ask the shops thoughts on how it happened or Came To Be .

Re:recall being done 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago
something sounds fishy to me there i drag race for a living and in my 25 years i have never heard of a cam shaft gear breaking or fracturing , cam breaking yes and on a motorcycle never something would hve to break inside the engine and jam the cam at high rpms and then that wouldn't fracture it, i would wait for them to finish it then go there to pick it up and then ask to see the fractured gear if they can't show then i wouldn't pay.

I did check the cam gear & it's broken the lugs that join the 2 gears together.I feel there's something fishy going on but it's hard to prove anything just have 2 take peoples word that what they're telling u is truthful. All in all the engine is in go nick bar this so i'm hoping they get the parts so i can ride her again'don't like the cb400 loner they gave me.

Since the part is on order and it will take a few weeks, you have time to investigate it and as well have time to talk to the shop how it is possible that it could have broken. Hopefully all can agree that it has something to do with the manufacturing process. Then call Yamaha customer service and ask if they can help.

The reason I say this, just prior to my recall work I had the dreaded front pulley oil leak. I went to the shop and they said to check the pulley nut, sure enough the nut was loose (could turn with fingers after taking lock washer off). Mind you, I had approx 45k on a 5yr old bike. Interesting, how does a nut that uses a 2 tabbed lock washer bent over a factory TQed nut loosen? There is no mention in the service manual of maintenance on this either and it is behind a chrome cover as well, hidden out of site. Speed forward, Take bike in for recall Wed. night, Thursday (about noon) get a call from dealer, pulley and drive gear are shot. Head over to shop, show me the parts, dang!!! They have a brand new pulley in stock from a pulley change out they did for a customer (31 tooth for customer) but would have to order the drive shaft. 270.00 bucks for both. After some discussion, they did agree, about it should have never gotten loose due to a locking system to hold it in place. I called Customer service, And explained my theory that the only way it could be loose was it was never TQed properly at factory. Customer service said they would call dealer and confirm this, well I already knew that dealer was in agreement with me. Friday, gear delivered and went to shop as well. Was told that it would be on Yamaha's dime. HOORAY!!!! It does pay to be nice, as well as calm, and logical when dealing with customer service. Any way, went into shop, wrench showed me how the 2 new parts fit together, slipped the pulley onto the drive shaft, I'll tell ya, they are such a precision fit, you would think it were one piece. There is not 1 iota of play with the splines engaged. Any way, I was a happy camper, no charge for parts, nor did the dealer lose out. Got the bike Saturday morn, been riding ever since. Almost 80k on the bike since the recall and has yet to leak other then me causing it to happen at 110k when I had to repair a neutral switch issue.

So, get all your facts in a row, and there is a possibility that you can get the parts on Yamaha's dime.

This is most likely a error on the part of the tech doing the recall. To perform the recall, the cams do not need to be touched, in fact, the cam cover is not removed at all, however the crankshaft must remain seated in the right side crankcase as the left side crankcase is removed.

If the crankshaft is lifted out of the right side even 1/2 inch or so, the cam drive gear on the end of the crankshaft will disengage with the split gear on the rear cylinder cam shaft and the gears will not go back together without removing the cam cover and re-aligning the cam gears.

If the tech doesn't know this and trys to beat the crankshaft back into place, something's going to break.

Jim

And just so ya know, if they balk at that and tell ya it does have to come apart that way. You can get a pdf file on the exact procedure, step by step on how yamaha does the recall work. There's even a NOTE: do not remove cam cover or stator cover. Also states this:

CAUTION
Be sure to hold the crankshaft against the
right case half to prevent disengagement of
the camshaft drive gear.

File is too big to put here, but I have it saved on my computer if ya need it

Is this it?

http://www.paulmilner.com/yamaha/handbuch/recall.pdf

page 2 says cams do not need removed.

page 7 gives the warning Erb mentioned.

Don't know anything about that, but wish I knew to upgrade the oil pump when mine was done ...
