2000 roadstar still not fixed. HELP... 11 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Ok guys. My roadstar originally ran like crap. spit and sputtered and when given throttle would die. Took it to dealer and they rebuilt carb. This helped but then you could only ride for 15 or 20 minutes until itwould warm up and then it did the same thing. Took it back to the shopand they said fuel pump. They installed it and then they rode it. Did not fix it.Then they determined my fuel line was collapsing. They installed a new fuelline and insured me it was fixed and that they had ridden it.. Upon riding it home it died on me 3 different times. But always running on hiway doing 55-70 miles per hr. After sitting for awhile it would run ok again.. I can ride it on streets and side roads for a few hrs and it s fine. But, if i get on hiway and run 55 plus for a few milws it spits, sputters and dies.. New fuel pump, rebuilt carb, new fuel line. What else fuelcould it be? thinking electrical maybe.. Any ideas. spent 500 at shop and they havent fixedit. Help please..

First, get your money back, any shop that says "it's fixed" and it isn't should not charge you for the job until it IS fixed right, and they should only charge you for the part of the job that actually fixed it (other wise they could just give you a new bike and charge you for it).

chuck out the rollover valve and see if your tank is venting properly.. no air in means no fuel out.. mine was bad when i got it..

Have you tried flipping the petcock over to reserve and ride it? Sounds like it's starving for fuel, so there's a resriction somewhere. I would start at the petcock by removing the fuel line and turn the petcock open and let it run into a can. Put the petcock in the regular position and then the reserve and see if it flows the same. If yes then I would look at the stock fuel inline filter next. You can remove the fuel filter and try and ride it without it to see if that makes any change. Start at the top and work your way down to the carb. Another thing to check is make sure your tank is venting. Try riding it with the gas cap loose.

Danny

P.S. Go back to the dealer and demand your money back as nothing they did cured your problem, and you should not pay for guess work. If they refuse threaten to turn them into consumer affairs for your state.

Operation of the fuel pump is controlled by the ECU, the Dyna 3000 aftermarket replacement unit has a history of failing to provide power to the fuel pump intermittantly, do you have a Dyna 3000? If so I would suggest switching back to the stock unit to confirm if this could be an issue.

MY 2000 ROADSTAR WOULD DO THAT AND STILL DOES FROM TIME TO TIME. AFTER I VENTED THE FUEL CAP I DIDN'T EXPERIANCE THAT FOR OVER ONE MONTH. I ALSO HAVE THE DYNA 3000 IGN MODULE. BEFORE I VENTED THE CAP IT WOULD DO IT WITH EITHER STOCK OR DYNA 3000 MODULE AND ON ANY RUN OVER 10 MILES. I REMOVED THE FUEL PUMP COVER TO MAKE SURE THE PUMP WAS STILL WORKING AND THE FUEL FILTER NEVER WAS LOW OF FUEL. PERSONALLY I AM SUSPECT OF THE SPARK PLUG BOOTS.( ONLY BECAUSE THE REST OF THE IGNITION SYSTEM INCLUDING THE PICK UP COIL IS NEW ) IT SEEMS ON THESE ROADSTARS ONE CONCERN WEARS THE SAME MASK AS ANOTHER. MY ROADSTAR DID THE SAME THING TODAY AFTER 400 IN TOWN MILES ( ONE MONTH )AND I COULD HEAR FROM THE EXHAUST THE ENGINE WAS NOT FIRING CORRECTLY THEN THE BACKFIRING BEGAN ABOUT 6 TIMES THEN THE ENGINE STARTED FIRING BETTER AND IT CLEARED UP BY THE TIME I GOT HOME. ALSO THERE IS A LOUDER THAN NORMAL KNOCK WHEN THIS HAPPENS. COME TO THINK OF IT, I HAD RUN 91 OCTANE FOR THE LAST MONTH AND YESTERDAY BOUGHT 86 OCTAIN, HUMMMM.
