4-00 engine issues 4 Years, 9 Months ago
ok, after looking through a bunch of old threads and from remembering what i heard on the old site, this perticular engine has some issues. done the tranny recall and am curently changing the oil pump gear, my tech and i have noticed that only 3 out of 4 lifters seem to be working properly.also notice what seemed to be condensation rust in lifters. ok i need lifters question is what kind? did yama update the lifters? or are they still junk? what after market lifters are recommended and is changing the cam neccisary, btw, the stock cam has no damage at this point. and whats this about mopar lifters??? and what other issues should i address before i put the engine back together and put it on the bike. not really interested in performance enhancers just want to get rid of the gremlins. thanks

welcome to the clinic Chefden, I think you have a few choices for lifters. I don't know squat about them, but I ran into a thread on the roadstar riders forum just today that has a good writeup on this apparently you can use chysler lifters. there is a link to there from the home page here. and the thread is probably still active.. if not search "noisy lifters" you should find it.. let us know how u make out..

Hi

You can use Melling JB2011, Sealed Power HT2011 or equivalent lifters. They fit AMC applications.

If the designation has an 'R' in the part number it the race grade. The internal spring and valving is much different.

... and to answer the rest of your questions.

Yamaha did not do a lifter update. Some of the '00 lifter seemed to have been bad as there was a lot of replacements at that time.

Cam does not need to be changed. You will need a high quality cam lube. You should use motorcycle oil to break it in.

I've provide info on break in procedure on a previous thread. If you do a search on lifters you should be able to find it.

Not sure what your question is.

Why would one use them? I don't know.

I've done a valve adjsutement and found the process to be tricky but not that hard. Some folks think it makes the adjustment process easier but it's not like you need to do it as often as you have to when you have solid lifters.

There is a fella named Odo over on RSR that mentioned them in one of his posts and I have seen them in a JP catalog. it was in the thread that I refered chefden to.. something about pre loading each lifter individually.. heck I don,t know, since Ive been here I have had severe brain overload..learnin about RS's, BB borads, and my wife's new vista puter.. I'm just about burned out.
