Intake cracking ???!!! 2 Years, 11 Months ago
Last week I answered in a discussion about missing and repl;ied that mine had one but I had cleared it up with a good hard blow the cobbs out ....OOPS was I wrong, yesterday on the Toy Run ( Here in Tulsa about 25,000 bikes showed up !!!) It started to miss again and got progressivley worse untill I had to run it on full choke to keep it going I looked around and couldn't find anything obvious and limped it home ( 5 or 6 mi ) . Today I ran some top end cleaner through it still thinking carbon build up, not much help so that means lests pull the plugs and see
what they look like, I didn't even get that far when I got the tank off I noticed the intake was cracked and spider webbed badly is this common(27,000 mi). I know this means it to be running super lean hope I didn't burn a valve or melt a hole in a piston.
What is a good aftermarket replace ment ? Do they make enough performance differance to warrant buying one? Anyone have one or a factory one for sale?
Comments/ Input/ Suggestions??
Dave

Hi Rocket,
My bike had a Nemisis manifold on it when I bought it used, so I've never had a good, upclose look at a stock manifold. But, from what I understand, the stock manifold is rubber coated over metal. So, I may be mistaken, but I doubt if the cracking goes all the way through to allow a vacuum leak there. I would check the seal between the manifold & head, or the boot where the carb hooks on. The Nemisis manifold is available for the pre "04 models, don't know if it is for the "04 and later models yet. What year is yours?

I didn't know there was a metal sleeve under the rubber, I just figured it was like most of this type and made of moulded rubber, I will go ahead and check the things you suggested then pull the carb first to check the manifold further if I have to before I buy a manifold. Any one else have any info/input?
Thanks
Dave

Ditto Aceman ..... trying spraying WD40 around the carb and connections to see if there's a leak. You can also use a propane but make sure there are no open flames. A change in engine revs will tell you there's a leak.

The Nemesis is only for the pre 04 models and you won't be able to get it if you live in the States. There are also a number of other vendors selling OEM ported manifolds.

I'm not sure I noticed some posts on the R* Riders Forum re "why can't I buy them". I believed someone accused someone else about something and it ended up as 'not available in the USA'. It would be best to go over to the Forum and do a search to track down the actual reason.

I know he as a ready supply so I guess if you really want one I could check and see if he'll ship to Canada.

I removed the stock manifold on my '01 to port it.The manifold only had metal on the mounting flanges, the rest of the manifold is rubber.

krb:

The rubber on the manifold is cast around the metal inserts. They extend (under the rubber) all the way into the carb throat. They stop just where the carb throat begins.

If you port yours, you will see metal under those corners you are going to be removing in the throat.

I was wrong in my wording.I did not port but I ground down the 2 corners on the inside of the manifold.I ground a smooth radius in those areas.Did not hit metal.
I understand that if I did port,I would hit the the insert at the flange end.
Correct me if i'm wrong but is'nt porting when you grind/polish to match intake/exhust to the head?

Porting would be any smoothing, shaping, grinding inside the part ( intake maniold, cyl. head, oil pump etc.) when you match the manifold to the head it is called port matching which of course can and should be a part of porting although it can and is quite often done without a full port job.
