What do you consider lugging? 11 Months, 1 Week ago
Nothing of major groundbreaking importance here, just sort of an informal poll...

It's been mentioned a bajillion times, and everyone probably has a slightly different answer, but I don't recall ever seeing anyone give an actual RPM number when referring to lugging your motor. So, I'm curious.

To me, anything under 1,500 RPM feels like I'm lugging the motor. What say you?

Yeah, Curt, I agree--2,000 to 2,500 sounds and "feels" the best, and I usually shift around 3,000. 1,000 RPM SUCKS when trying to be quiet in neighborhood early mornings.

Lugging? It'll "tell" you. She won't be happy, and the sound isn't just right. You can "feel" it as well.

To me lugging would be cruising at anything under 2k rpm & cruising at 2k rpm for long period of time may be lugging it a bit too.

In general i like to cruise in the 2,200-2,500rpm range arround town or out in country driving, when cruisding on the open road/interstate with a 31T pulley i cruise at approx 70-72mph = approx 2,800rpm.

Good shift point for everyday conservative/fuel saving driving is approx 2500rpm-2,800rpm,non fuel saving shift at approx 2,800-3k rpm.

Ask Tim Tinney.

He thinks 2000RPMs it to high for cruising at 55MPH. He wants another gear.

Personally, my bike tells me anything under 2000 is lugging.

Couldn't say, have no idea what the rpm's are when I ride.

Hey Roadkill, where did you get the seat back and is your shield on that you cut down or did you buy it that way? (Where'd you get it?).

The seat back/driver's backrest is the one from Custom World. I like it a lot, but I wouldn't mind if it went back another inch or two. Its best selling point is it's designed for solo or with the pillion attached, as it mounts under the fender eyebrows and has nothing to do with pillion or its mounting holes.

And the shield is a Yamaha Boulevard Windshield. It's great...just high enough to arc most of the wind over my head, but gives me the impression I have no shield at all. I love what the Silverado shield does for me, but it just blocks so much of the view so I take it off whenever I can. With the Boulevard, I can do 70 MPH with no excessive buffeting of my head in the wind.
