New to forum and new Road* owner HELP w/ backfire 1 Year, 4 Months ago
|
|
I just purchased a 2003 R* 2700mi. It has a cobra exhaust system and K&N air filter. I don't know if it has been jetted. I would assume so since the bike has a custom paint job and looks like the previous owner put alot of $$$ into it. I picked it up as a salvage, so i am unable to talk to the owner. Here's the problem.... in the accident, one of the pipes got dented blocking about 25%, and when i let off the throttle, she backfires ONLY through that pipe. Is it because of the restriction? If so, any ideas on how to "open" the pipe back up? the PMS was out only 2&1/8 turns, I now have it at 4&1/2 turns out trying to stop the BFing.NO LUCK. Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to give a little background. Thanks.

Post edited by: silver_fox, at: 2007/09/02 15:19

Welcome to the Clinic
I would guess first that there is an exhaust leak on that pipe. Where the can fits to the head pipe or where it bolts to the head.
There is also a tranny recall on all 1600 Roadies. If you aren't sure if it's been done call a dealer or Yami cust service and give them your VIN. They can tell you if it's been done or not.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2007/09/02 15:39

SilverFox, first welcome to the clinic.
Your PMS is out too far to be helping the B/F, if it would have helped, it would have before then. It is probably do to the restriction, but who knows. A fellow Roadie by the screen name BARTISH was selling several sets of pipes on here a couple of weeks ago, and at a fair price, why not just replace them?
If the AIS is still installed on the bike, it too , can cause unwanted backfire. Just a couple thoughts. BB

Thanks for the info. I screwed the pms in to 3&1/2. I'm looking for a replacement lower header pipe. The AIS is still installed. I have to get the bike inspected by the state patrol on tuesday. after the inspection and it passes. OFF goes the AIS. Insn't the recall only for the 99-01 1600s? Thanks again.

You should be covered. Shouldn't cost you a dime. But (There's always a but ) while they're in there you should have them put in the new stronger oil pump gear. That should only cost you the price of the gear. They shouldn't charge you labor. Do your best to find a dealer who has done the recall before. The more they have done the better. Talk to as many people as you can and ask them about good or bad experiences they have had with any dealers in your area. If you have to go 100 miles to find a good wrwench it will pay off in the end.

Thank You so much. I really like this site. alot of knowledgable (sp) people. Thanks again. I'll be calling the dealers and see how many recalls they've done with their current mechanics. i've been reading a number of posts with bad outcomes after the recall work. Hopefully mine has been done already.
