Re:is it possible 11 Months, 1 Week ago

With the so many areas of the intake system all over the place ( Needle settings, Jets, chopped up airbox ) with almost no calculations for how things should work together other than the jets to small its going to be hard to get any kind of indication.
But I bet it runs pretty crappy

Truthfully I think if you return the carb to 100 percent stock it would run better than it does now even with holes chopped in the airbox which just creates wind turbulence at speed.

Other option get the right parts and well,,,,, Do it Right .

bump the clip up to the 4th and try it.. when i did that it stopped the sooty exhaust and it runs great..your main sounds small but it depends on your elevation,so they say.. try the clip..you can always move it back..

you can have a lean wot, and a rich pilot ckt. Or you can have a lean pilot ckt and rich main jet ckt.

Cruise mileage is based on the pilot ckt, needle and needle jet (this is the tube that the needle rides up and down in), usually 1/4 throttle or less. low mpg's can be because of an incorrect float level (too high), choke not completely closing, too big a pilot jet, too small an air jet, too many turns out on pilot screw (This pilot screw controls fuel flow. out flows more fuel) Needle clip position usually has not much effect on mpg below 65, 70mph.

*4life,

In your current situation I would go ahead and do a poor man's BAK and bump the jetting up to a known spec as a starting point. The stock air box with holes is too much of an unknown, and since I saw on another thread that you wanted to go that way anyway, I thought I'd give you another reason

Mine's a 1700, but with pipes, poor man's BAK, and a ported stock manifold I'm running a 172.5 main, fourth groove, stock pilot (35), and about 2.75 turns on barrons PMS. My mileage is between around 42-46 on the open road anywhere from 75-85 mph.

Good luck. Nice looking bike, BTW!

Personally I found on my bike that doing any type of rejetting with the stock air box and the poor mans BAK to be useless.
