AIS? 1 Year, 10 Months ago
I have an 08 strictly stock with about 4000 mi. Getting what sounds like an exhaust
leak ( no signs of one ) after it warms, runs ok just noisy. Thinking it could
be the AIS, Pros or cons of removal on FI bike. I read comments about running
rich-lean, the injection system should compensate shouldn't it. Fuel mileage
is also an issue. Any experience, thoughts on the subject would be appreciated.
Love the bike otherwise.

What are you hearing? What "sounds"?

The function of the AIS is to inject air into the exhaust stream to 'clean up' the unburnt gases. The AIS itself does make a slight noise.

It can be removed without any affect on the bike.

The FI bikes will compensate if you are running to lean or to rich. What kind of fuel mileage issues are you having? I have a 09 that is stock and getting about 42 mpg. Don't know what I would get out on the highway. I expect it to go up a little when motor is broke in.

+1 My 08 makes all kinds of noises. The exhaust sound seemed to changed around 5000 miles. Runs great, so I just ride through it!

I have a loud whistle sound when I hit the gas and it gradually goes away when I let off of the gas.

I don't seem to be getting very good gas mileage fo some reason.

But bought the bike used with 8000 miles on it and not sure if they had done any jetting and then put the stock exhaust and air intake back on it to sell. Bought from a dealer the guy traded it in for a Harley they had.

But after a while it started the gas puking out of the air intake or at least out of the bottom of it and it really comes out and floods the bike when it happens.

It's not blowing any smoke or anything else it just seems to be sucking gas.

I do plan on changing the exhaust and the air intake some time very soon.So I will wait and take care of that all at one time.

Plus remove the AIS which I hope will take care of that irritating whistle.

Most everybody takes off the AIS, typically right after installing aftermarket pipes due to the popping. If you actually had an exhaust leak, that too would be your symptom (popping).

Like Doc says, There's no advantage/disadvantage in regards to mileage and removal of the AIS. It's an emissions device..

Maybe tells us what it sounds like and we may be able to send you in the right direction.

And, welcome to the Clinic.

Mileage seems ok, nothing to brag about. Mostly local riding, haven't had time for any
extended trips, hopefully in the future though.
At times it sounds like a leaky heat riser valve, dating myself. Seems to be coming from the left side, more pronounced wnen warm. Has good power and runs smooth. Appeared
at around 700 mi. Didn't take it back to the dealer, we're not talking, a long story I may share some day.
Gonna check the valves, plugs, tighten everything up and keep riding as much as I can, maybe just normal sounds, maybe I need louder pipes. After working in a loud engineroom
for 35 years I kinda like quiet.
I amyone has any thoughts I would appreciate it.
