Synthetic Oil in an 03 Midnite Star 4 Years, 8 Months ago

I'm brand new to the board, just found it yesterday. Found all kinds of helpful info on it already. Read several items about using synthetic oil to reduce heat and noise. I've been told by the Yamaha Service Mgr. I couldn't use it in my 03 Road Star because of the transmission and clutch. Would someone explain, please.

I run Mobil 1 V-twin in my 03. Someone on here will explain why they tell you that. But its my opinion they want you to buy Yama lube so they profit from it. But you can run certian synthetics with no problems.
Welcome to the Clinic, its a great place to learn and laugh...

Geez another Yamaha service person who knows nothing-what a suprise. No problem running a synthetic in your 03 Roadstar.I run Amsoil in my 05 and feel it is worth the extra expense as I believe in the extra protection one gets from synthetics.I still change it at 4000 miles with a filter.Bottom line is run a good oil synthetic or not and change it at 3-4 thousand miles and your Roadstar engine will go for many happy miles. On another site there is a rider that has a 01 with 140,000 trouble free miles. He changed to synthetic at 80,000 miles.

Welcome to the clinic RedBeard. You will find a lot of good info here, along with great support from everyone. I am fairly new here myself, my stealer told me the same thing about synthetic oil. I have use Amsoil MC 20w50 for years in my old 85 HD Sporty. The main thing with MC oil is you need to make sure it is made with out friction modifiers. As soon as my 03 Roadie gets another 600 miles on it after the tranny recall work with new rings I will replace the Dino oil with Synthetic. I am sure others will chime in and tell you all that they know too. Jay A.

Thanks for all the info, This is what I really hoped I would hear. I had a further question about the high mileage, but you already answered that. I had a piston break a 32k and rebuilt the engine and now have another 35k on top of that. With that said, I'm due for a oil change now and will do it myself with the instructions I read on line yesterday. Again, THANKS

Welcome to the clinic RB
Syn is fine.
Won't hurt a thing.
Yami tech's are morons.
Here's what ya do. Drain both plugs. Put in 4 qts. No more , no less. Put the cap back on and don't unscrew it again until the next oil change. Don't look at the dipstick. It will only confuse matters.

Amsoil and any of the syn's are the best, took all the noise out of the bike, lifters and valves much quiter. Ready for another 4,000 mile oil/filter change and the oil looks like new.
Just like to keep it at its best.

I switched to Amsoil on my 05 Midnight R* and I will never go back it runs cooler and it dramatically reduced the valve noise. My Amsoil rep has a R* and said you can get about 4to5k before an oil change in the hot areas (CA, TX, AZ, NV) in the midwest and east he said 6000 mile oil changes! Here is the Amsoil rep I used great prices and super fast shipping. http://www.lubedealer.com/rickdurdle
I also heard alot of people used Mobil 1 V-twin too and really like it.
My only regret was not switching to the synthetic earlier.
