#40049 07Midnight Star (User) Fresh Boarder Posts: 8 Backfires when cold 1 Year, 4 Months ago   My bike is basically stock i have drilled my exhaust baffles and drilled my air cleaner. When my bike is cold I've been getting this horrible backfiring after just a cpl minutes of riding like its loading up really bad and backfiring through my intake and exhaust. Then it goes away and my bike runs fine but seems doggier than it used to be. I have been turning my pilot screw in leaning it out in hopes of curing the problem. Turning in the PMS will just make it worse. Try going the other way on the PMS and see how it goes. Start at 2 1/2 out and work from there. You need to richen the PMS screw not lean it out. Doc should be along soon to correct me if I'm wrong BT   Logged       The administrator has disabled public write access. #40057 ridefree4life (User) Fresh Boarder Posts: 13 Re:Backfires when cold 1 Year, 4 Months ago   i have the 07 r* with 3.5in crome works long gun shot gun exhaust ,with a kuryakyn r-hypercharger....i have had it back to the dealer 3 times for re-jetting and i am still having the back fire problem...i let it idle for 10-15 min b-4 riding and the first 3-5 miles it back fires... the dealer has had 3different reasons for that.. the latest is that when they changed from the 1600 to the 1700 the piston was increased to 5 in. which took awy the room for the oil to flow from the top end back to the cases(due to close tolerances)...also week valve springs ,exsessive carbon,to many and on parts ,.,.,., all of these are all hog wash(((( i have had the problem from520 mile at the first service till now at 6500 miles in 4.5 months more info later   Logged     The administrator has disabled public write access. #40075 DocShadow (Admin) Hmmmm .... send beer Admin Posts: 11040 Re:Backfires when cold 1 Year, 4 Months ago   Take some top end cleaner (RingFree, Marvel Mystery Oil, Seafoam, [your favorite brand here]) and put some in a spray bottle. Take the air cleaner off, start the bike and put it into high idle (1500 rpm). Then lightly spray some of the cleaner through the carb throat without stalling the bike. After about 30 seconds, let it idle normally and spray enough cleaner into the carb to stall the bike. Leave overnight. In the morning, start the bike. It should backfire and such but try and keep it running in order to blow out the carbon. Come back and tell me how it runs after this treatment. I have been running seafoam as a fuel additive to try and clean things out but this sounds like a more aggressive cleansing. That sounds like a normal Roadie, Cold-Blooded. Try letting the bike warm up real good befoer heading out. These roadies hate being ridden until the carb has warmed up well. If your'e not careful when the bike is still cold, the bike can stall. Then if you don't gab the clutch quik enough, you can go for a spill at low speeds. My Roadie has always demanded a good warmup before riding to avoid coughing, farting, and backfiring.   Logged     A Fallen Man is not a failure.   The administrator has disabled public write access.
