Oil Change Interval 10 Months, 1 Week ago
This is probably a sore subject but I am going to ask it anyway. I know not many people use the Yamaha reccomended oil in the manual but what about mileage between oil changes? Manual reccomends 4,000 miles. Is this pretty standard practice? Thanks guys.

I change mine every season (in WI that's 6 - 7 months or 4 - 5000 miles). Guess it depends on the use.

You will get different opinions here - personally I change it every 3-4K miles or every 6 months if the bike hasn't reached 3k in a 6 month period. Obviously synthetics should get you more mileage, but we won't get into the dino vs synthetic debate.

at the shop I work at we recomend every 3k to 5k. i personally try to do mine every 3k to 4k. which i have already done mine 2 times this year. a lot of riding so far with the good weather. as far as synthetic we recomend every 5k to 7k. i use yamaha lube 10w40. and we put it in most bikes. if the bike isn't ridden very often we use the 20w50 yamaha lube. we use yamaha lube because we get it the cheapest.

It's obvious that the more frequently you change the oil, the cleaner your oil will stay and your oil will never "Wear out" However, it's not cheap to do that, some say 3 months in an engine and oil will begin to break down on it's own, if your riding a lot, it won't hurt to change more frequently. If your cheap like most of us, you want to stretch it out as long as you can. So Dino about 3-4K, Syn 4-6K. It's up to YOU on how long you want to leave old oil in your bike.

If it's stored over the winter, put fresh oil in before you store it, and soon after taking it out of storage, just use Dino then.
