Starting Problem 4 Years, 8 Months ago
Bought a brand new Midnight Star in June. (Love it). Question though. After I have ridden for a while and it's good and hot, I can stop somewhere, turn it off and when I go to start it a few minutes later it acts like the battery is down. Sometimes it just clicks, sometimes it doesn't turn over enough to start. I can usually wait a second or two and then it will start. It has never seemed like the battery has had a full charge since I bought it, but it has always started. Just wondering.

I've also noticed this characteristic on occasion. It does not seem that replacing the starter cable or decompression valve has any effect.

What you can try is roll the bike in gear for a foot or so. I may be that the piston is at TDC and the starter just doesn't have the power to turn it over.

You could always drop a Warrior starter in there.

I found mine doing this more when starting in gear, so I made it a practice to start in neutral. Doesn't eleminate but seems to help.

I would not start the bike in gear when it cold. The clutch plates begin to dry out and stick together consequently it's like trying to start a bike in gear.

That's why you'll notice that when you start it up in neutral and then put it in gear with the clutch pulled in, it pops forward.

Thanks for the information. I may still need to get the battery checked because it did it "cold" this morning when I started it. But I will try your suggestion.

I bet if you check the voltage on the battery it is OK, my 03 has always acted that way. It does help to start it in neutral and as silly as it sounds, when I push harder on the starter button or continue to hold it in, it seems to act better.

This was a very common problem with the 1st Gen Venture Royales. My '86 would always "barely" start after running the bike long distance. Sometimes even short distance. The common solution for them was to install slightly larger gauge wire from the battery to the starting circuit and to ground. The Ventures' wires were just a bit too small for the current that was needed. I'm not looking forward for it to happen again with my Roadie. We'll see.

I had same the problem. Sometimes would not turn over for no reason mostly hot. I used to rock it over comp and it would go again. Sometimes it would go a month without doing it. Finally one morning when running late for work it wouldnt turn over so in desperation I pulled the seat to look at the battery again and wiggled the neg terminal and found it slightly loose, maybe 1/4 turn, could also smell faint smell of an arc(dead give away). Tightened the terminal and thats all it took, has been running sweet ever since no more dramas.
Was dreaming up all sorts of possible probs, like dodgy decompressor solenoid and faulty starter commutator bars etc. Still kicking myself I didnt look closer at the battery the first time it happened !!!!
Hope this helps
Brett

Re:Starting Problem 4 Years, 8 Months ago
changed my battery a couple of winters ago.

a couple of times after cold (-5ºc) nights, i got the bike out and the starter span a bit on the slow side for the first revolution.

`uh-uh, no way josé´ i thought. the idea of bump-starting 330kgs of bike on a flat road at 8am (NOT my best time of day at the best of times) in the cold does not appeal at all!

changed the battery for another, and after 2 winters worth of cold starts it´s still fine
