"pipes have a raspy sound"

You don't want to hear this but that's how they sound.

You could make them sound 'how you like' by trying different types of internal baffles, but it would be a trial and error exercise.

To make them "rattle windows", if possible, remove the internal baffles. Be aware that without the backpressure afforded by the baffles you will lose some bottom end (torque).

Backfiring through the carb means the air/fuel ratio is incorrect. You should be able to cure it by adjusting the PMS. Check out Gram's article on the PMS at http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/95/96/

You may have also not rejetted correctly. What are your jets and PMS setting?
