Re:New Member Disillusioned With Bike :( 8 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Well ill certainly take on board all these comments as i may not have broken in the cam and lifters properly in the first case and i will learn from this if thats the case, I have a friend at a Yamaha Dealer who i have just spoken to about a price on all the new parts, Im lucky i guess that i kept all the old packaging from the parts from last time so i have all the part numbers etc at hand. I just want to get something clear here first tho, would it be best to buy the Chrysler Lifters or just buy the Yamaha ones again?? Is there a real advantage of doing things this way or not??
Im off to work now so wont get to see any post`s untill later so thanks again for all your wisdom...

I like the idea of using the Chrysler lifters and it seems like quite a few people here have already done this but im a little confused as to why so many people have had to replace their lifters or camshafts and lifters in these bikes in the first place?? Is this known to be a common fault on these bikes?? and if so is it more common for the rear cylinder cam and lifters to fail than the front cylinder?? Ill check with my old parts from when i bought the bike tomorrow but i think it was the rear cylinder that failed in this bike when i had bought it...

It not a common problem across all years. Over the years it seems that there has been a batch of parts fail ... probably due to poor batch or switching suupplies.

The 'rash' of lifter 'problem' was confined to around 2000 ... but that's not to say others have not had problems with lifter since that time due to other reasons.

Well i think it`s about time i started fixing this bike, I now have all the parts needed to get stuck back into it so today i pulled the cams out. It is the rear cam and lifters only that have failed, the front cam and lifters look perfect so im a little confused as to why the rear has failed so badly yet the front is ok, again! I initally thought this was due to the "bad batch" of lifters floating around but i dont think it can be a coincidence that the rear has failed so badly and yet the front is still really good. I have bought new cams, gaskets and this time the Chrysler lifters - (Yamaha wanted $89.50 Each, Chrysler $4.00 Each) Yamaha Australia are thieves
............There seems to be plenty of oil pressure at the lifters etc but as i looked closer at the path of the oil i noticed that the o-rings on the oil tranfer tube seem to have lost there shape and seem like the edge is now squared off essentially not providing an adequate seal, the tube is providing enough oil to the lifters but the loss of pressure around the o-rings seems too great to provide enough spray out of the 4 very small holes that lubricate the cam lobes (see pic with wire thru the holes) I could possibly just replace the o-rings but after spraying some lubricant thru the tube the spray pattern didnt seem to be that good out of the holes that lubricate the rear camshaft so ill just get a new tube aswell, Yamaha Australia wanted $119.75 for the transfer tube and the 2 o-rings so i went to PartShark.com and ordered the lot for $77.59 including shipping so i hope they arrive soon and then i`ll be able to continue

Ricks,

Thanks for the update. I'm following this with great interest.

I'd much rather look at pics of others' teardowns, than to have to do one on my own *!

Has anybody researched using roller lifters? There should be some that will fit. The only thing you might need to make would be a collar to keep them from turning in the lifter bore.
