So... I got a set of Ya,,i short engine guards because I couldn't beat the price. I also bough a set of D-ring highway pegs (again, price). For some reason I thought the engine guards would be just a tad taller and wider - in fact, I'm not really sure what the h* they could guard as small as they are.

Anyway, I though there was an outside chance I could mount the pegs to those bars and at least have an interim set of highway pegs until I can invest in a Lindy multibar or other highway bar.

Long story short....wrong angle, wrong height, wrong distance from bike.

Just wonder if anyone else has a small engine guard and what, if anything, you've done to get some highway pegs on the scoot.

I ride a fair amount of miles, have long legs, marginal knees, and a fake hip. Would love to stretch the legs out from time to time.

Thanks ahead of time for your feedback.

chunt889 - Based on your height and physical needs, I would recommend selling the small engine guards and using the money to buy something that will work. I have similar needs and I love the Yamaha big engine guard. I installed the large Kuryakyn ISO pegs.

http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=metric&ci=3257

They swivel and you can move them up and down the guard until you get them where you want them. My .02 cents.....your mileage may vary!

Like you I purchased the small engine guards with the sole purpose of mounting highway pegs to them. I wound up with the Kuryakn Longhorn offset pegs http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=metric&ci=3260. They have other choices now that may be better but these work OK, not great, but OK. Kury quality is very good, but the fit and comfort is marginal. Big bars or Lindy bars are a better choice. The Kury stuff is not cheap, but can be had several places for less than direct from Kury. Good luck.

I went thru the same situation-mounted the small engine gurads last year (look nice, don't do anything if you lay 'er down...).

Just put a set of floorboard relocation brackets from Tipp Cycle Specialties on the bike a few weeks ago, which put my boards forward 3-4" and at a nice angle, and also mounted a set of "Starpegs" (also from Tipp) at the saem time.

Great feel, plenty of leg room, nice look...I'm 6'2" and my hip hurts on rides ove 150 miles (dislocated hip from socket 5 yrs ago in bike wreck, and arthritis is setting in).

Anyway, you have to remove the engine guards, because the extension brackets use the same mounting hole(s) as the mini-guards. I'll take a pic of them and post it here later so you can check it out...

Happy Trails!

chunt:

I have the Yamaha small engine guards, too. I put these Kuryakyn pegs on:

http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=metric&ci=3258

It's taken a while to get them adjusted to where I like them, but I've got it set, now. I'm about 5'9" and 200lbs with average length legs, so I don't need a lot of room to stretch out.

Initially, I found my heels were hitting the shift lever and brake pedal, but have that taken care of now by their positioning. Mine are positioned somewhat similar to the ones shown in the photo. I do have, though, the dually pegs, not the ISO ones shown. I don't remember whether I ordered the long or the short version, though. I can probably check at lunch and figure that out.

Good luck!

I did something similiar. Bought the two piece guards on ebay and when they arrived they were a lot smaller than I had expected. Ended up reselling them and going with the cobra fatty ( 1 1/2 inch) bar. Lost a few $$$ on the deal but the 1 1/2 inch bar really looks good on a bike this big.

I thought there might have been someone out there manufacturing extensions or brackets for idiots like me.

Thanks for the replies thus far. Looks like a few things are evident:

1) I'm overly optimistic.
2) I'm short-sighted
3) I'm cheap (and pay the price for it)
4) I'm screwed and need to spend more money
5) I'm living with it for now

You're not alone dealing with the small guards.

I too purchased the small guards. I was a bit dismayed at just HOW small they are and was scratching my head wondering what they actually "guarded".

So now I'll be reposting these on ebay hoping to get back the $$ I spent on them and put that toward larger bars.

Live and learn.

I went through the same thing. Bought the small engine guard because I'm basically cheap, and some used cheap foot pegs.
Finally got rid of both, bought the big yama bar added the ISO pegs from Kuryakyn, and I'm a believer.
One thing I've learned during the last 6 months and 10,000 miles, is that cheap usually ain't as good. I've decided now to do without some bling until I can afford the good stuff. For some things that might be never!
