Just curious, could you cut the spacer a little shorter if you wanted to lower the front end?

I just skimmed through these post and didn't see mention of anyone draining there fork oil with them on the bike, there is a allen head screw on the bottom of the fork after you remove the front axle you have access for draining the oil, I just did my springs and oil change on the bike and it was a gravy job.

Thank you so much for starting this thread, Doc_V, I too was completely confused and dazed by the included instructions.

Thats probably why my progressive springs that I ordered almost five years ago are still in the box .

I was waiting for a really boring day to take the time to be confused, so I went to more pressing issues in my life.

But I will get to it, after all this information. I have changed fork oil in the pass, hardest part was sweating not to strip the threads on those

caps will applying pressure over the spring.

So thanks everyone!

You would trim the spacer at the top of the main spring, but you have to put a spacer down at the top out spring to set the length of the forks.

The excess spacer length, [the part protruding above the top of the fork tube before you put the cap on] determines your preload. Too short would mean not enough preload. But worry not, they have a spring especially for lowering your front end and it installs pretty much exactly how I described my progressive spring install. It would be better to get that spring set up than cut down the spacer on a progressive spring and not have the proper preload.

Check their sight for the spring you want:

Side note: I took a longer ride this evening and got out on the highway; the progressive spring does feel harder on the bumps, but over all, you get better handling, which in this rider's opinion is worth the stiffer ride.

yes, no, not really...
If you read the directions for the progrissive spring, you're really not suppose to do that.
Yamaha measures fluid from top of fork and this is 4.3 inches. Progressive suggests that is too much oil for their springs and recommends a max of 5.5 inches which means less oil. Thats all in the directions that comes with the springs. I didn't do that But I thought I'd post the correct directions

OK you got me
But I've never been told that I had 1.2 inches too much.

I did it twice. I put the progrssive front spings in at 1" lower and a progressive rear shock at 1" lowere. I didn't like the ride, so I took off the progrssive springs and shock and put the stock ones back in. Really, If I can do it, you can. It is not that hard to do. The only boo-boo I made was when I had it all back together I looked on my work bench and seen my front fort tins setting there! All I had to do is pull the top triple tree off to get the tins back on. It's just time comsuming and don;t forget the allen bolt in the botton end of the fork. If you do not take that bolt out they will never come apart. Good luck.

I know this is an older thread, but I didn't want to start a new one on the same topic.

The directions I received in my box are contradictory. One says to cut to 6.5" the other says to set the spacer to where it is even with the top of fork. So, that's what we did.

We also followed the directions as to how much oil to add...5.5" worth.

I'm goig to be getting on the bike for the first time since the install in about half an hour and now I am nervous as hell.
