2006 Roadstar here with V&H Longshots, Speedstar K&N intake (exposed). Bike was dynotuned & rejetted before I bought it. Idles like an odd-fire tractor but cranks like crazy with the twist of the throttle with no stumbling - really a strong runner.

I started it running only premium gas and couldn't break 32 mpg no matter how I rode it. Switched to plain old 87 octane 10% ethanol pump gas & my mileage shot to 42 on the first tank & has stayed there ever since. Some Roadstars just don't like premium.

Mine is bone stock. Nothing done to it, except a minor carb tweak to help a stumble right off of idle.

Gets 45mpg plus all day. Up hill, down hill.....

I would highly suggest to open the carb to see what's in there. Could have been set-up with after market pipes and filter but back to stock to sell, and left the carb with the jetting for the after market goodies that are no longer there. But since that is an unknown, best to open her up.

Stock pilot jet 35
stock pilot screw 2.5 turns out from light seat
stock main jet 165
stock needle only has one groove and has a spacer and one washer

all Mikuni jets have their logo stamped on it an "R" and a box in a box
main jets on top
pilot jets on the side. need to remove pilot jet to see the stamping tho.

There is no reason not to get at a minimum 40mpg at cruise (65mph as per mikuni test) and as good as 50mpg.

I never get better than 34-36 MPG, no matter where or how I ride. No leaks I can find. And I've jetted it from stock to very lean and everything in between, and it hasn't made any MPG difference, but it DOES make a difference on how well the bike runs. I dunno... it's still better than the 17 MPG my Ford Escape gets, and a lot more fun.

After reading some other posts featuring claims I found extraordinary, I figured I'd try 89 octane for this last tankful...I've never run anything other than 87. It's weird...the bike seems to run stronger, and there's a definite difference in the exhaust tone (deeper). And I usually have the fuel light come on at about 130 miles, but it just came in at 145 miles. I'm waiting for the tank to run out before I figure mileage. Why on earth would this be? I'm not complaining, it's just odd to me.

And FWIW, I always run an ounce of Stabil Marine Grade in every tank.

I've gotten as low as 34 mpg to as high as 52 mpg. I usually count on 38-40 mpg. '07 Silverado. With only a K&N air filter and stage one mod to the exhaust. I ride two-up a lot. My wife and I weigh about 340# combined, and when we are traveling you can add another 60#.. I do use 2 ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil with every tank full. Snake oil? Maybe. If your bike is running good, your plugs are clean, don't fret too much about mileage.

=============

RK,i also run 1oz marine grade sta-bil in every fillup along with 89 octane fuel too.

A while back i noticed the motor liked 89 oct fuel better then 87 oct esp on hot days riding 2up,there was also less noise in top end with higher octain 89 fuel on hot days too.

Just like anything there can be too much of a good thing too meaning with the R*s head/piston/combustion chamber design in general running anything much over 89 octane isntr good either.

Thats because by design running higher octain fuel like 91-93 -94 octane could actually lead to additonal carbon buildup due to uncomplete burn of higher octain fuel that the low compression R* was not designed to run on in the 1st place.

I actually read that deep in a Yamaha site someplace it can happen with the R* motor if ya run too high of octane over 87-89 so figure since Yami stated that it's like true.

On your increased mpg,I think the reason you get better mpg with 89 vs 87 oct fuel is that there may be just enough more energy produced with the slightly higher octane fuel that equates to a little more power output that in turn lets you use slightly less throttle to obtain same perf/road speed which equates to less fuel used.

BTW,over 2k miles so far with the Ride-ON you suggested in both tires & so far all is good with no issues at all, nice smooth ride & ballance of tires with no more ugly metal ballance weights!

Hope we never have to test Ride-On's ability to seal 1/4 diameter puctures!!!/LOL!!!!!
