Slip-ons or full swap? 1 Year, 3 Months ago
I've been looking at all kinds of slip-ons and full sets of pipes for a while now - geez there's a lot - and I've got some ideas of what might work for my situation, but I wanted your opinions (here we go). My thoughts are:
1. Slip-ons are less expensive, but I'm still not sure if they're as effective as a full swap would be, since I'd still be using the R* headers - does one type have any real advantage over the other?
2. I want good low end rumble and decent running noise (for safety), but not the kind of noise that sets off car alarms (my next-door neighbor is a deputy sheriff, plus I really don't care about impressing the HD'ers - so 3-inchers are probably out)
3. Not really considering doolies right now

I hope this makes sense. It's late and I've been fighting a bad cold all week. I'd appreciate your thoughts, guys.

Tom

Slip ons can be a pain to get sealed up at the head pipe / muffler joint.

Tom,
I went with slip-ons because of the cost factor; about half the price of a full set, but you already know that. I've got the Roadhouse 65 Specials and love them. Nice low rumble but not too loud or annoying, however I have set off a few car alarms!! Discussing Roadhouse pipes may be a moot point though since they may or may not be in business anymore. But there's another thread relating to that, so.......
As for what Musky said regarding problems sealing the mufflers to the head pipes, I haven't had that problem, but I have heard others complain about it.
One place you might look (if you haven't already) is ebay. Seems like there's always somebody selling pipes and from what I've seen, you might be able to get some pretty cheap.
Good luck and ride safe!

Aaron

Hey papatom, I started with a set of slip-ons from Cobra when I first got my bike. The sound was definitely louder, eventually I installed the Bubs and the sound deepened. The flow from a full exhaust will be better than with the stock head pipes, good luck choosing

try a set of khrome werks slip-ons.

the fit is excellent with no sealing problems (model specific), quality is excellent, exhaust tone is nice and deep but not outrageous, and you WILL gain a noticeable jump in ponies despite using the standard downpipes.

best part is they are on offer as `end of stock´ at $100 a set. bargain of the moment in my opinion.

here´´s what they look like (sorry it ain´t a better shot)
