I have a 2001 Roadstar also. It took me forever it seemed to figure out how to read the code by getting flashing lights, the book did not help much either. I had a solid light that would come on while I rode too. By accident after getting the light, while putting it away, I hit the kill switch on the handle bar and left the key on. Wallah, the light went from solid to flashing a repeating number sequence. From there you can use the manual to figure out what it is trying to tell you.
