gear oil leak 6 Months, 1 Week ago  
i rode my 99 roadie to work the other day 20 miles when i parked it i could smell gear oil so i started looking around and found gear oil running down the trans. cover but cant find where it was coming from wiped it up when i rode home no leak. any ideas where it came from is there a blow by or vent that could do that

Is the inspection / fill plug tight? Also could it be from your breather? If the leak was gear oil generally it would leak on the bottom not the top I would look to something above the trans first.

Yeah, Sounds more like motor oil if it was coming down from above. There is a vent hose connected to the front of the rear cylinder head, generally it'll run to the back of the air intake, if your bike has been modded then maybe it was rerouted to below the bike. The hose may have come off.

Gear oil has a real distinctive smell and there is a vent for the transfer case on the right side up above the cover. It shouldn't spit any oil out of there unless maybe it was overfilled or got really hot.

The vent looks just like the vent you usually see near the differential of a rear wheel drive car.
