Question on rollover valves. 1 Year, 6 Months ago
|
|
I just took the AIS off my 09 R* and now all is right with the world.
I was looking at what else I could clean up and found a single vent hose coming from the gas tank. The hose splits into two and goes into two rollover valves and then combines into a single hose again. A few zip ties later the hose is down by my left floorboard.
I'd really like to clean it up by just taking a single vent hose from the gas tank down along the frame (where it's mostly out of sight) and end up where it is now. To do that I'd like to get rid of the rollover valves. Does anyone see a big problem with that. I'm guessing the hose just vents the tank and the rollover valves are just one way valves that prevent a gas leak when the bike 'rolls over'.
What do you all think?

I don't even have the hoses on there any more, just make sure you zip tie a small filter(I used a piece off a t-shirt)on the tube on top of the tank if you go that route

It's a gamble. Like you said it prevents gas from spilling out of the tank if it ends up on its side. Personally, I wouldn't want that to happen if I somehow became trapped under the bike.

Yeah. I'm trying to weigh the risk. I wouldn't want to win the lottery on this one. Maybe I could relocate the values to a less visible location. I'm wondering why the hose splits into two and uses two valves. I wouldn't think there would be a need for that much air flow to vent the tank unless it's in case one gets clogged.

As soon as I get done with my trailer and have room in the shop I am going to do the ais block of, have the kit sitting on my desk. I don't remember the hoses you are talking about, are they around the ais area in the front?

On my 09 the valves are mounted just above the regulator assembly. It's not part of the AIS system. It's quite visible on my 09 but I can't see it on my 04. Must be in a different location on some bikes.

I guess on an '09 things are different. The rollover valve was usually located under the seat near the left side cover which is where the one on your '04 should be. Some did clog and collapse tanks so maybe Yamaha put an extra one in just in case. The FI fuel pump is very strong and unlike the carburetor pumps could probably easily pull a dent in the tank while running down the road if the vent was clogged.
I suppose they can be mounted anywhere you like as long as they are mounted vertically.

I took my roll over valve out. Then spliced in another section of hose & left it in the same location. That was a while ago. No problems.

When you removed the roll-over valve does it vent the tank?? If so why the need to vent the gas cap when going pumpless?? Just asking!!!!

The problem with the roll-over valve is if it gets dirty and sticky it will stick closed and the tank won't vent. That's why the mod on the gas cap. I did what scotto did and been fine.
