Lowered Saddle Bags: Here's how... 6 Months, 1 Week ago
Well the discussion came up about lowering the bags

http://roadstarclinic.com/component/option,com_fireboard/Itemid,187/func,view/id,434668/catid,49/limit,10/limitstart,0/

Thanks to Kai Sayson's post in the above thread and the pics he shared on on how he did his I thought I'd give it a try and see if I can save myself $70 bucks (buying Geno's).

I went to Lowes and bought a strip of flat aluminum. Its about an inch wide and a 1/4 of an inch thick. I cut to pieces a few inches long and drilled a hole a the top. I removed the bags and then removed the luggage rack and hung the strips of metal as shown.

The lower brace of the Luggage rack that mounts below the Passenger floorboard I simply mounted in an existing bolt just below it here:

Once I had that connected it was just a matter of lifting the rack up to where I wanted it.. Mark the hole and bolt the rack in place.

I wrapped the brackets in electrical tape. Here's a pic of one finished.

Here are the rest of the pics:

Everything went pretty easy. Total cost was just over $12 bucks.

Yeah I originally intended to use a bracket as well but when I was at lowes I really couldn't find what I needed and decided I'd at least start piecing it together with the other parts but when I got to looking at the bike I noticed that just below the foot pegs there was a larger bolt that was in a perfect spot on both sides so that really worked out for me the best!

dysan, the location of the bolt that you used for the bracket near the pipes. Isn't that where the the bracket for the exhaust go?

Kai,

Ahh yes you are correct!. I had taken my stock exhaust off so along with that rear mount that once bolted there. I assume anyone wanting to lower their bags will have already gotten rid of the stock exhaust because if not the bags would hit the stock pipes immediately.

I have a question...What was the reason for wrapping the brackets in black tape? Cosmetics? Just wondering..

Cosmetic. I was thinking of painting them black to match the rest of the bag hardware but it was so much easier to just wrap them in tape and quicker than having to wait for paint to dry, etc. You really can't even see the brackets at all once everything is mounted up.

Once that electrical tape gets wet and hot your going to have a mess, the glue for the tape will turn to goo.

Thanks. I'll keep an eye on it. If it does I'll clean and plasti-Dip it with Black. I don't know if paint will hold up on Alum.
