99 roadstar problems, need advice 1 Year, 6 Months ago
Hello guys,

I'we been following this forum for a while now and i found alot of info here that helped me
Recently i bought a 99 roadstar and i'm having some issues
I'm not very good with mechanics and that is why i opened this topic to seek help

It seems that the previous owner removed alot of things from the bike and i'm having problems with it
Along the things he removed was the oil tank, including all hoses
The bike now runs only with the oil inside the engine, i did a oil change recently and i added the exact ammount specified on the manual, problem is once i started it and ran a few miles the engine spits out alot of oil
I am not sure at the moment how much oil is left inside and if it is safe to run it like this (i did so far about 2000 miles)
I will attach a some pictures from where the oil is coming out, i need some advice .. from where are those coming and going, is it safe to cover these holes, will the engine run fine without the oil tank and these tubes closed ? For what is the extra oil tank used ? Most of the bikes i owned ran only with the oil inside the engine, no extra oil tank was needed
Thanks alot

P.S explanation for the pictures
1st picture (the 2 hoses marked are missing)
2nd picture (there is a tube near the oil cap where you put in the oil, that is also missing a hose)

without the oil tank then the engine only hold 3.2 qts. when doing an oil change, there is still approx 1 qt that will not drain, so you would only need 2.2qts. for an oil and filter change.

NO! do not plug the crankcase breather. attach a hose and let it sit below the bike or a hose with a small filter, it's vent, do not plug it. You called it a PCV hose nipple.

on the 1rst pic hose on the left you have it marked as a oil tank breather hose im pretty sure thats your oil return line for the oil tank. as erbman said the one you marked as pcv hose nipple is your crankvent. im trying to figure out why or how you can remove the oil tank.

Without going back home and looking to see where those hoses run I can't answer the hose question, but what I will comment on is the missing oil tank! Why? I can't understand why would someone want to remove some of the life blood that keeps that engine running. Would your body be as phyisically fit if you were 2 pints low on blood?? I don't think so, so why run a motorcycle engine that was designed for more oil with less? First off when you change the oil even on a R* that has the oil tank, most of us here don't follow the recommended manual for oil level. We put a new filter on and 4qts and call it good. Been running my 2000 that way now for 70,000 miles. If the oil tank is gone I couldn't tell you how much oil should be in there, but I can tell you this it's not very much and I would not run a R* motor with that little of oil. What little oil that is running through there will get hot so fast. To each his own but I would recommend you find an oil tank and put it back on.
If you don't get an answer on the hose problem I can look when I get home later today.

I've seen a few RS's with chains. 1 guy I know had a little too much HP on his RS and would always break his belt. Chains don't break

I"m curious how much oil you put in. Some of the older manuals had a mis-print and stated to put in 5.3 qts. Stock RS only needs 4 qts during an oil change.

Hello guys,

Roger .. i will let it breath as it is the PCV or at least attach a hose and a filter ..
What about the other 2 .. the top left which is the return to oil should i be closing that route or ?
The major problem is the second picture hose which spits the most of the oil .. what to do with it ?
As Erbman said .. without the oil tank i still have inside 3.2 qts of oil .. shouldn't that be enough to run safe the engine ?
When i changed the oil i put it 4.2qts but i don't understand why it spits out so much of it .. it seems to be more than 1qts
To answer your question .. i think the main reason for removing the oil tank is space .. he chopped down the bike and i guess there was no space left for the oil tank .. how big should the tank big in it's original size ? how many qts should be in there ?
Yes, the bike has been converted to chain .. don't know the reason why .. to be honest after i bought it i kept repairing on it since many of the modifications were poorly made .. i will post those latter on so we don't get to confused
I thank you in advance for helping me figuring out this
