Got what I need, I think.. 1 Year, 3 Months ago
I think I have gathered everything I need to get rid of the pump, I just picked up the needle valve assembly, 4.2, which will replace the 2.3 pressure feed. Also have 2 feet of 5/16 fuel line, clamps, and an inline filter.. I'm going to leave the gas cap and vent tube alone at first as after reading that history post on rsr (all 187 pgs..) It seems I may not need to change anything especially if I take off the rollover valve (after I find it ) anyway, bending and drilling that little pipe is not something I want to do if I can help it.. Wish me luck and if you folks can think of anything I'm missing please let me know..Oh the choke I guess I will need to see how much cable I have to play with...

If you are committed to not going back, you can fashion a real nice choke bracket from the fuel pump mounting bracket. Whe you remove it you will see what I am talking about. There is a hole top center - facing to left side of your bike - that it will fit perfectly into. I have done quite a few now.

I grind or cut all the unneeded bracket off, leaving just enough metal around the hole to make the bracket strong, then slot the hole so the cable will slide into it (just the cable, not the terminators or fittings - smaller slot). Then get some black rust-oleum and paint it before putting it on.

Whatever you do, don't dissassemble the choke cable. There is a little tiny detent ball that gets lost. Without it your cable will tend to slip back in while riding. Just loosen the back nut until you can slip the choke cable out of the bracket, leave the front nut alone (its for adjusting the tension on the cable).

Leaves the choke in a real easy to reach position, tucked up tightly to the bottom of your tank.

BUT, no fuel pump bracket anymore You can't go back without finding a replacement bracket.

Here's mine

Oh yeah, don't use any pulling pressure on that choke cable when you go to remove it. The cable will pull slightly out from the carb end of its fitting and you will be slightly enriching constantly from then on.

Loosen up you carb so you add slack to the cable if appropriate.

Thanks Gram, I am committed to this mod as my tastes lean to less is better. I took a look at your pic and then went and looked at the bracket on my bike, I see exactly what your talking about it actually has 4 or 5 holes in it and i assume you used the top one.. Did you find a need for additional venting on your gas tank..?

I never went pumpless. Bike has a vacuum pump just like Doc. It works well, so haven't changed it.

If I was doing it over, I'd go pumpless.

btw.. Here's an old post about removing all this stuff if you need it:
Removing Tank and Carb

Thanks again Gram, I hadn't really planned on removing the carb, although I'm sure it would be easier to do with the carb on the workbench, but looking at my hsr manual, it seems like all i need to do is drop the bowl, then a retaining screw for the pivot rod and another for the jet seat.then pull the old one out and pop the new one in.. not sure if I can adjust the float in this position but I think I can..

It probably pulls out of that little socket, gets caught on the edge and then does not go back in on it's own..I guess you need to re-seat it back..

The carb end has a crimped on cable end. When you tug on the choke cable pulling away from the carb it pulls slightly out. You will be able to see that amount pulled outfrom the scuffing. Anyway, now the choke is pulled out by that amount permanently. Problem is that the enricher valve is now slightly unseated. I have never been able to fix that cable once its been pulled out, always had to replace it.

But I was able to see the difference with my exhaust sniffer after putting a new one in. Found the same on a couple of buddies bikes.
