Thanks again Gram, I hadn't really planned on removing the carb, although I'm sure it would be easier to do with the carb on the workbench, but looking at my hsr manual, it seems like all i need to do is drop the bowl, then a retaining screw for the pivot rod and another for the jet seat.then pull the old one out and pop the new one in.. not sure if I can adjust the float in this position but I think I can..

One more thing Flash...

The stock pump bracket has two mount holes in the top. I always put the inside hole on the bracket into the outside hole on the frame. Pushes the choke knob just far enough out to be easy to reach while riding. So now you only have one bolt holding it on, which also allows you to angle slightly backward (if you want to). Just tighten the bolt real well, I did and it never moved around.

I believe mine is pulled out. It would certainly explain why I haven't been able to eliminate that persistant slight richness on the low end, which cannot be dialed out by the PMS without affecting the performance. I've even take the valve out and checked to see if it was sticking.

But how would that factor into the equation. I still need the choke to start it up, even when the ambient temp is hot. If the cable is pulled out a little then it should start right up without the choke. The current jetting must be compensating for this condition because except for the soot it's running strong .... even the gas mileage is good.

Thanks Gram .... going to try and check it out tonight.

Very interesting read. Mine always seems to smell rich at idle. My buddies does not. They are piped and jetted the same, as I jetted both of them with the same kits. I still get an occasional touch of SVS, he never has. I did lots of carb work on mine, and I can remember that cable being pulled kinda hard by accident , as I was in there the first few times. What again are the signs to look for on the cable itself? If I need a new one, cables typically are no more than 20 bones, wander if that's my issue as well? BB

Check the carb end of the cable (you could check both, but thats the end I see damaged the most). There is a crimp-on terminator for the sheath. If it has been pulled out you will see it there. You will see a small area that is scuffed from being pulled out of the sheath.

Once it gets pulled out, the crimp connector (if its still tight) keeps it out, effectively lengthening the sheath. Mine was pulled out at both ends....

For whatever it's worth, Flash, I've got a new (in package), V-Star1100 choke bracket, which you could have (for shipping) if you want it.

This bracket bolts to the left-side, rear, tank bolt. The choke is (according to the many that have done this) just exactly the right length. The result is, your choke tucks nicely between the rear of the gas tank and the front of the rider's seat.

Let me know if you want the bracket. It'll fit in a padded mailer just fine, I'm sure. Probably weighs about 1/4 lbs.

Hey Randy, Thanks for the offer,, I'm not sure the cable will reach that far back,, after I get things apart I'll give you a holler, I would really like it in that location..although I think Gram has a good thing going especially on a fast black bike.. Ya know, give me a couple of days and I should have things worked out, I didn't do anything today as I was collecting parts... and courage. drillin that tank vent out is not for the feint hearted as Doc would say.. .. give me a PM and let me know what it will take to ship it to atlanta...Thanks again....
PS. I know I will want to go with the big bore in the future so please stay in touch.... Is the bottom end on these engines up to it..

I have been able to jet around it for others with the same problem (and no replacement cable available). Its just adds a layer of complexity by adding a fourth circuit that has to be balanced out. The distance of pull on the cable that equals what I found wouldn't even get to the first click. It would be like just pulling it out a mm or two. But thats just enough to engage that enricher circuit all the way across the band.

I doubt it has any real impact at high RPMs, but changing it out made low rpm tuning a lot tighter. Almost seemed like I increased my control range with the pilot circuit and bleed-over on the main.

I found this problem on MOST Road Star's that were rejetted by their owners. And mine was that way too, so this is more common than we will think it ought to be. Not real sure how my USED bike got that way Must have been the previous owner

(nope, I did it)

If you are committed to not going back, you can fashion a real nice choke bracket from the fuel pump mounting bracket. Whe you remove it you will see what I am talking about. There is a hole top center - facing to left side of your bike - that it will fit perfectly into. I have done quite a few now.

I grind or cut all the unneeded bracket off, leaving just enough metal around the hole to make the bracket strong, then slot the hole so the cable will slide into it (just the cable, not the terminators or fittings - smaller slot). Then get some black rust-oleum and paint it before putting it on.

Whatever you do, don't dissassemble the choke cable. There is a little tiny detent ball that gets lost. Without it your cable will tend to slip back in while riding. Just loosen the back nut until you can slip the choke cable out of the bracket, leave the front nut alone (its for adjusting the tension on the cable).

Leaves the choke in a real easy to reach position, tucked up tightly to the bottom of your tank.

BUT, no fuel pump bracket anymore You can't go back without finding a replacement bracket.

Here's mine

So Gram if the choke was diassembled then its screwed up??? ....mine doesnt self retract and I put it back just how I found it as I have disassembled it as this is the first time I have heard this referenced anywhere....hmmmmm dam just gotta take it apart I guess ...Musky now we know why yours retracts ....lost your balls errr ball enlightning errr enrichning ...thanks for the headsup Gram ....I am waiting on a smaller freeer flowing chrome filter that is smaller as well becuse I am going from the top of the manifold to under it because going to reserve when I do is not good enough for me ....Coug
