Using a different fuel pump 3 Months, 4 Weeks ago
Hey guys. Juined my fuel pump (it's been a long day...don't ask)in the prosess of relocating it & see the original Yamaha (Mitsubishi) pump is not cheap. Was wondering if anybody has replaced it with a different style of pump, like a universal in line pumps from the parts store. I see in my service manual it says the original pump is between 2.1 & 3 psi. The parts stores have these pumps in a variety of pressures & I can't see why one wouldn't work (probably better than the original POS) just wanted some opinions.

I would like to just get rid of it all together, but I just ordered a new needle & seat for it, & I don't want to mess with float levels & this "grizzly valve" to try & go pumpless.

Thanks in advance for any info.

As many who have went pumpless I am sure there will be one floating around here that can be had for next to nothing. I will be going pumpless soon if you don't find one. There is a vaccum pump that has been used and I believe there is a write up in the tech section.

P.S. Go pumpless and forgetaboutit!

The stock pump supplies fuel according to demand which may not be the case with the universal pumps, I don't know.

When the carburetor needs more fuel the stock pump just speeds up a little so the running level is kept at a certain point. It uses a complicated mechanism to accomplish this.

As far as the reliability of the original pump how does 70,000 miles and 13 years sound. Knock on wood. LOL

the universal pumps will work i replaced my pump with one and it worked a treat, but i got the larger neddle and seat set of ebay in a rebuild kit for $28 and was a brease to do you just need to vent the fuel cap as well and that takes about 5 minuts, and there is a artical in here on setting the flote level by eye and it works spot on and is eazy as
