Exhaust 6 Years, 2 Months ago
I recently purchased an '05 Mid-Night Silverado and now want to add some pipes. Not unlike many of us, I am looking for a nice, deep sound that is not pingy or throaty. There are a lot of pipes to choose from and I don't want to but the 'wrong' ones. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm using the Vance and Hines Powershots. I've gotten a lot of compliments about the sound and looks. I think they also provide a bit of a performance advantage in that they're similar to the two into one into two performance pipes. The pipes are loud (I wanted that!) but you can buy a baffle that will quieten them down somewhat. Good luck in whatever direction you decide to go.

Stage 1 mod on the stock pipes... costs = 10 dollars for metal cutting bit / burr for my dremmel and about 8 hours time... very deep rumble when at idle, not offensively loud at throttle... got tons of compliments ~Guido

I have to agree with Dave on this...I did a Stage One mod about the same time he did...I initially went through the cones and baffle but after seeing his work went back and removed the cones and drilled and dremeled the baffle even more!

For a few dollars worth of tools (hard drill bit and dremel stuff) and a few hours worth of work, you may be able to save yourself BIG bucks on a new exhaust system...if you search this site you will find a video I posted of the difference the Stage One makes

JM2C, YMMV

I agree with both Dave and TMK on the stage 1 mod. I had put Cobra slip-ons on my 03 roadstar and they had a loud pop to them. I added a K & N filter box and re-jetted and the pipes became to loud. I read the article that Dave had posted and started the project. At first I did stage 1 it had a good rumble to it (a great change from the slip-ons). I wanted to be a little louder so I went to stage 3. I am really happy with the sound a deap rumble durriing idle and a mellow rumble while riding. I have heard may different pipes on *'s and would have to say modifing the stock is by far the best way to go Cheap and Great sound. Thanks Dave.

I too did the stage one to my stock pipes and love the sound. A deep rumble with a roar at throttle that won't set off car alarms. I only drilled four half inch holes in the baffle thinking that it could be reversed with tapered thread plumbing plugs and reinsertion of the cone. Well I doubt if I would ever go back to stock and looking at davehrns picture makes me wonder if the fancy cutaway he did would make it sound even better. Then there is the stage three. Decisions, decisions.

My only concern with a Stage Three would be if there would be sufficient back pressure. I seem to recall a thread here from way back that the bikes run worse in Stage 3 mode because of the lack of back pressure!

I've had Vance and Hines power shots on my '05 Roady for 3000 miles. They are great! They make good power and are really only loud when you crank the throttle, which what I like. At a steady rpm, say at 50 to 60mph the are quiet enough for me to hear the radio I installed on my bike, and are not so loud that it gets on your nerves after a full day of riding. "loud" is realative, to everyone it is different. Personally I want it "loud" when I crank into it so people it cages can hear me.

By the way, setting off car alarms makes me smile too.
