Quite frankly they are NUTS !!!!! There is no reason why you can't install a K&N air filter on your bike w/o doing anything else. I did mine and everything is just fine.

Yeah, should I be looking for something else? I plan to get new pipes and jet the bike, and if I can figure out how to get the carb off, I'm going to port the manifold tomorrow!

Going to new pipes with the stock airbox with the K&N is no problem. And no jetting needed. Might have to tweak the PMS or might not. You don't need to jet until you increase the air intake by doing the poormans BAK or get an aftermarket air kit. So until you do one of those I wouldn't mess with the jetting. Porting brings out the best in the pipes, airkit, and jeting but until you do all those I wouldn't port it. Since you have the K&N you can do the poormans BAK in a half hour and it's free. But your stock airbox will never be stock again. So you need to decide if that's an issue. Here's a link to the poormans BAK

And would you need to jet if you just went right to a BAK? Where do you get the BAK, and compared to the ported mani, new pipes, K&N, and jet, would the BAK be tons more?

If you can afford it, get the BAK or any other air cleaner that turns you crank. The BAK is the name for an air cleaner from Barons Custom.

If not then go for the K&N and poor man's BAK.

Either way ..... port the manifold.

With the K&N kit you posted a link to you would need to buy a jet kit too. With the BAK you get the jets, needle, extra clips, I think extra washers, 4 allen head bolts for the float bowl. So price wise it would be close to a wash. But if you like the look of the K&N kit get it and don't look back. If you do go with the K&N air kit or the poormans BAK I would recommend the Barons jet kit.

This will tell you how to take the carb off - http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/60/96/
