Gear Ratios 4 Years, 7 Months ago
Hello All,

Being a newby to Roadstar riding and not having a tach on the
Roadstar, I am having a hard time judging the rpm's when I am riding. I found a formula that I think will help me put everything in perspective.

http://www.jpcycles.com/Tech/Ref/TopSpeed.aspx

I am having problems with the gear ratio. The instructions say (Primary X Secondary) What gear am I in?

I was thinking of making a spreadsheet that will cover speeds from 0-100 MPH and all gears (1st, 2nd, etc.)

Any gurus out there?

Stan

I just shift by the seat of the pants and sound of the engine.
It don't hurt to hit the rev limiter once in awhile. I'll give you a bump
and see if some one else can help

Greysnake,

I shift when it sounds and feels good. I would like to know approx. what RPM the engine is turning by the sound. At what RPM's is considered to be lugging the engine?

I seem to hit the rev limiter at about 82 mph in third gear. What is my rpm's when this happens. Mostly curiosity I guess.

Stanag, I'm not a good student on math so I am sure there is someone
on here that can figure that out or may already know.
The stock limiter tops out at about 4800 and with a speedstar
module it bumps to 5500rpm. Wish I could have been more help.

You will hit the rev limiter at the same rpm point no matter what gear you are in but obviously at a different speed for each gear. The rpm at which you hit it will depend on which igniter you have.

As a comparison .... I hit 62 in 2nd with the limiter at 5000 rpm.

Thanks for the help, but when I substitute 4800 for the RPM's into the formula. The equation says that I am doing 98 MPH, my speedo says that I am doing 80. Maybe I expressed myself wrong. I seem to do that a lot as I get older My question is the (total gear ratio = ?)

Thanks for the intrest

The constant (168) is most likely screwing you up. The formula is probably for a specific bike.

Re:Gear Ratios 4 Years, 7 Months ago
Hello all,

I believe that I have found what I am looking for. This site has calculators for everything. The one that I am interested in is (RPM's to MPH). I will make up a spreadsheet and submit it for approval, if anyone is interested. The spreadsheet will have MPH from 0-100 in 5 MPH incriments with corresponding RPM's. I will use the specs. of an 07 Silverado.

The site that I am using is http://www.bgsoflex.com/auto.html

Thanks for all the feedback.

Nice research Stan,
I looked up each stock gear ratio on my '06 Midnite.
Now maybe I can calculate my RPM's tool
Thanks
Tom
