tubes? new rims..existing hubs...180/70/16 tire.. 1 Year ago
Hi, I ordered the metz 880 180/70/16 from denniskirk. Buchanan's put a 5.5" 16 rim on my hub. didn't even think about a tube being needed... kirk's description says "tubeless only"... ...what do I do now? Can I use a tube for this tire? what would be the danger? since i have a spoked rim (it's an excell and is flat with not dimples). If I can use a tube, what size and brand and where to get it?

I have spoked rims, but run tubeless tires, you can use a tube with tubeless tires, I do, Metzeller Tubes are the best, very heavy duty, buy them from the motorcycle superstore, just search your size needed.

Tubes are used in tubeless tires on spoke rims every day. Both my Michelins are tubless and have tubes in them. Metz was one of the tires brands I was looking at when I went to purchase and DIDN'T get any "you cant use those on spoke rims with tubes" comments about them.

By the way this information you are giving us... is useless without PICS

Thanks for replies. I was/(am still a little) worried about getting someone to mount them and not refuse since I have a tire that says tubeless only. by the way, called local harley shop and asked if they will mount the tires... they hung up on me when I said "I already purchased tires online".

I then called local yamaha shop and he said he will mount them, no problem.

It doesn't make a diff as far as tubes if tire is radial, does it?

fyi... I will post pics when I get my rims and tires from kosman/buchanan, denniskirk tomorrow, 5/3/12.

As long as BOTH tires are radials or bias ply then there should be no problems

No. not a 180 on stock rim... I used stock hubs and having 5.5" wide rims put on. still haven't received finished product...but I just ordered the 180 in anticipation of having it mounted as soon as I get it.

I chose the 180/70 r16 because it has taller profile (i hope) than the more common 180/65,or 180/60. Now I realized its a radial tire so trying to understand if that will be ok on the stock rim (with tube, of course).

I already cut bottom lip off fender subframe sides (rear), and ground brake stay... bike sitting on lift for 6 weeks now waiting for it's wheels

--i meant if the radial will be ok on the 5.5" spoke rim (or any spoke rim).
thanks for all your replies so far... I feel a little more confident in it working.

thanks for the info. I will let you know how it goes at the shop I take the wheels to. I'm getting 180 on both front and rear. hopefully they don't refuse to put the 180 on front in reverse direction.
