The reverse direction scares me. They are designed and built to go in one direction.

Lots of people have put radials on a rim not made for them. I know that some sport size radials that are Supermoto racing sizes are specific to tube use, but I'm not sure about the other way around.

Your wider rim is probably designed with the radial bead lock profile. Radial profiles have a higher bead lock height, or a deeper bead channel, I'm not sure which. It is designed to keep the bead from unseating in a run-flat condition. This is an old NHTSA requirement extended from cars. I do not understand why the lack of a tube would inspire this. I would think any tire would benefit fron this, but many older spoked wheels have almost no bead groove, and if they are run flat, the tire has a tendicy to dismount.

Good luck with it.

I agree, the reverse running direction when putting a rear tire on front sounds weird, but I have done some research and that is the recommended procedure when using a rear on front. Has to do with the way the tire was built, I guess. I guess I will find out.

I have a reversed Michelin Commander on the front of my 03 right now with a shit-ton of miles on it, and she's running fine. I've heard of (but never seen) people running a Valkyrie spec radial front backward on the Raod Star, but those tires last for shit on the Valky, so I never thought about it. They are radials, and expensive to boot.

actually, I think the 180/70/r16's I ordered are meant for valkyrie replacement rear tires. Hopefully they work out ok on my new rims. Tires arive today and rims should be back next week. I'll let you know.
