xv1600 engine replacement 1 Year ago
My dealer is telling me due to low compression readings and leak-down tests, my engine is showing internal damage, and that the engine must be rebuilt. He put together an estimate and quite frankly, I would either have to be made of money or just plum crazy to spend so much on it. My options are not good. If I cannot find a good replacement engine, I am in trouble, because I am not at ease rebuilding the engine myself. I am sick over it, no bike to ride, how can it be? Any suggestions from the roadstar community would be appreciated.

What are the readings, and why did you have it checked?

EBay and PinWall (re)cycle...

Best option or find a wrecked Roady locally.

Not sure what your repair bill versus replacement is but I know there are several 1600 motors on Ebay at the moment. You may also want to check any local salvage yards for wrecked Road Stars, good luck...Major

Rob, what happened to cause you to take it to the dealer? Did they know to disable the compression release before taking the compression readings? And as for the leak down test, where is the air leaking out of?

These are very durable engines and not given to failure. Might be time to do some investigation yourself.

+1 on this great advice.

Very serious to see a Roady with a roached motor. Not everyday...

Unless you had improperly installed High Compression Piston...

Knowing Roadies... and knowing how most dealers are... it's a good chance there is no problem. Or a simple one.

I'd want to know what those readings were, where it was going, and why you took it to them in the first place... and like the others are saying, I'd be in a bit of shock that a Roadie engine failed. How many miles on that thing???

What are your basic symptoms? Does the bike crank up and then run bad? Lots of knowledge on this message board.

I would sure get a second opinion. Whatever part of the country you are in, maybe one of the good people from the Road Star Clinic can look at it with you.

Some folks on here have some pretty high mileage bikes without major engine failures like that.
