Rob, what happened to cause you to take it to the dealer? Did they know to disable the compression release before taking the compression readings? And as for the leak down test, where is the air leaking out of?

These are very durable engines and not given to failure. Might be time to do some investigation yourself.

====================

Exactly what i was going to suggest!.

Update, afer reading all posts from original poster of this thread before spending big bucks for another motor i'd to a couple decarbonings using ring free or curts Seafoam proceedure to decarbon motor.

If your not up to handling this kind of work take it to another shop that you can fid has a good rep.

Then id go thru carb ensuring needle & seat are ok and chk float lvl.

Now to stop the carb from puking fuel when hot like many R*'s do you can insualte the fuel system like i did to stop carb puke if you want to retain stock elec f-pump.

If you go pumpless that opens up motor for enough aditional cooling to stop carb puke in most cases
esp if you dump lrg stock airbox on other side of motor & install a BAK so the motor now gets more additional cooling on both sides vs stock where motors closed in with lrg stock airbox on one side & the elec fuel pump & fuel filter with bracket & cover blocking cool air on the other side .

Maybe you could chk valve clearance while your at it but it's not a must.

Then after your done checking carb's needle & seat & float lvl adj along with a good decarboning of the motor i'd change the plugs, the fuel filter ,& the oil & oil filter too, then see how it does after that.

I'd be willing to bet after doing the above it will run a lot better .

What does he consider a rebuild to be? Even if you do have a compression issue ( which is unlikely) you wouldn't need a eng rebuild. All you would need is to replace the rings or put HC pistons in it. IMO the lower end would be part of a rebuild and that has nothing to do with low compression. The hard starting after sitting hot sounds like a carb issue to me. Are you having any performance issues other than the hot starting?

the bike runs well, I have no complaints on performance otherwize. I honestly think that the dealership has done poor job over the last 3 years on diagnosing issues. I am going to have to get second opinion and probably try to do some work myself if I can.

This dude is full of sh!t... take you carb off and clean it thoroughly. Sounds like somethin may be sticking (thanks to ethanol). If that doesn't solve the problem, take it to someone who you KNOW can properly perform a leakdown test. These guys are in the market to make money, not help you. Have the guy identify the problem area. If it's the heads, take them off and have a valve job, valve guides, and bowl blend done since the heads are off. I can almost guarantee you that's the problem if anything. I highly doubt the cylinders on these bikes crack that easily...Unless you're pegged out and running it that way for....i don't know, days?

Curt's right about the Texas heat. We had 70-odd days straight over 100 last summer in the DFW area, and I rode my bike 6 days a week throughout, with going-home commute temps into the 106-111 degree range. No hot starting issues, and it still runs like a top with 48K on it.

Unfortunately, most shops nowadays have "employees" in the back, not tradesmen, not journeyman mechanics that live and breathe the machines they are paid to maintain and repair. It is unfortunate that this trend is flowing into the aviation industry as well. Many joke about "living the dream", but I actually am. I wanted to work on aircraft from age 12. 30 years later, the overwhelming majority of the time, I look forward to goin to work and being challenged and learning something I did not know the day before. Guess that's why they pay me the big bucks.

Find yourself a REAL technician to look at that bike. It ain't right, but it ain't broke down!

+1 Also take the lowers off of your crash bar. Air cooled engines need air

Mine used to puke gas and then didn't want to start after it sit for a little while. I started shutting the gas off a little ways before I was going to stop for a while, saved me alot of headaches.
