transmission 1 Year ago

I am new to this site and might need some guidence here. Hopefully I have this in the right section. I have a 03 Roadstar and I am having transmission issues. I have called Yamaha customer service but they were not very helpful. I have discovered over the years the best help comes from owners, they are here for the love of the bike not to make a quick buck. My problem is I lost 5th gear. I feel for certain it is where it is suppose to be it just don't engage any longer.LOL This happened all of a sudden with no warning of any noise. When you shift into 5th gear it is like going into neutral. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so I would really appreciate any suggestions on what it might be. Thanks

The early R*'s had a factory issue with transmissions. Anyone having a problem were to return to a/the dealer for a fix at no cost. Once done they'd put a punch mark on the neck by the serial #. This says the tranny was rebuilt. More info follows.

This has happened. Not enough for everyone to worry about, but enough you need to take note. Yamaha knows about it, but they aren't telling anyone but dealers. You need to get to a dealer who has done a fair amount of recalls, keeps tech notices from Yamaha, and really knows the bike.
Problem is the gear teeth (if this is what happened) fall to the bottom of the tranny oil pan. They are heavy enough to stay there (but imagine if they don't).
Please check this out really well. Make sure the dealer is checking for this problem.

You should be able to call any dealer to verify if yours has been done (or required it). I think once they issue a recall they are required to take care of it for anyone who owns a bike it has not been done for.
