Transmission recall 1 Year, 1 Month ago
|
|
|
So I found out today while at the dealer that my bike has not had the recall fixed. The service guy then informed me that with the recall I could add high comp piston, heads, and valve springs, and any other engine mods I would like for only the cost of the parts. The service guy said they use to be able to get a speed star setup that included all of the parts for the mods. My question is what is the advantage / disadvantages of doing the high comp pistons and other stuff.

Advantage, power.
Disadvantage- Cost, and fast bikes wear out faster than normal bikes.

If you have the money to spend, its good for the economy. My 01 is plenty fast for me.
With pipes, and a BAK or the equivalent, and the proper tuning of the carb, the stock Roadies respond very well. Edit.....a different ignition module to go with the pipes and BAK as well. Bumping the rev limit from the stock 4250 up to 5, is a big jump. Once you get past those gains, the extra money just doesn't net the same value(my opinion).
See about the drive gear(edit... shaft) for the oil pump?? while your getting this done, the early models had some failure issues. There's a small piece at the bottom of the Tech Articles page. Something about what else can go wrong ......

The float level in the carb, should be set to the 04 and later spec, if it's not done already. Whooops!! wrong one,....try this one

The front drive pulley, could be fixed up also with some red locktight...

From what I have seen it is 99-03, but I am not sure if that is it or not. They apprently punch a mark next to the vin if it has been done, but you can alway ask the dealer and they can look it up.

In all reality, High Compression pistons and better springs do nothing for these bikes, without a better carb, a better set of CAMS and better intake, Head porting/smoothing work and Exhaust pipes.
You'll get *MUCH* better bang by porting your intake, getting a BAK and full exhaust and tuning your Carb. About the same cost as the HC Pistons and the springs and work cost, especially if you get a low cost BAK you can learn about here.
HC pistons have a history in these bikes of "slapping" with the looser tolerances they typically have.

the good is you are only paying for the parts and starting the set up for more intense preformce mods
the valve spring are good to have to help when you have a dynatek3000 and raise the rev limiter but while the heads are off have them ported and polished even decked pistons go with the wisco not the speedstar made by je the wisco are light a higher compression and cost less also have the valve thier tripple cut or even a five cut
this with pipes air kit ported intake is a great set up and later on you are ready for cams and change the jetted carb for a 42msr
the bike doesn't wear out any faster due to the cyclinder walls being nsc (nickel silicon carbide)not steel lined (like hd)or ceramic lined. yamaha uses the term ceramic coating as a ganeric term.
here is a link to what is used

recall years 99-03 do not count on the punch mark call 800-962-7926 ext.3 give them the vin you can also find out were and when your bike was first sold so you can take down a maintaince history

Isn't there a website or something that you can look up your vin and it will tell you whether or not its been done? I swear I thought I saw this somewhere and with all this talk about it I want to double check mine.
