Additional Horn 1 Year, 2 Months ago
I've got a new super loud horn that I'd like to install IN ADDITION to the stock one. I don't want to use the same button since I'd like to have both horns operate independently of each other.

I was thinking of placing the new button in the area of the red dot on the included pic. I haven't cracked open the switch cover to see about the possibility when I decided to draw from the knowledge here first.

Any ideas?

Thanks much,

M7

I had those things apart more times than I care .... next time I'm taking pics.

I don't think there is room in that area for a switch.

I have an old pair in the basement .... let me check tonight.

Poprivet mounted a switch underneath.

Hi Mark,
You could do like I did on my 1100. I put on a set of Wolo air horns, and kept the stock horn in place. I wired them both up to a two way on/on toggle switch so I could select which one I wanted to sound, while still using the stock horn button. I drilled a hole in the left side cover and mounted the switch there.

I've got just about enough savvy on electrical to cause bad smells and some smoke, so talk to me more about the on/on toggle. Sounds like the answer to my problem. I need the first grader version with pics if you got 'em.

Thanks!! I knew the brain trust here could help me out.

Well Mark, I'm really no better than you as far as electrical savvy goes. And I sold the bike over 4 years ago, so no pics. But, it's really very simple. Go to a Radio Shack, Home Depot, Lowes, etc and get a toggle switch where both poles are hot (on). Wire one side to the factory horn, and the other side to the new horn. The switch that I used actually had three positions, it was labled as an on-off-on switch, with the middle position not powering anything.

Found this in the Tech Tips section of this site. It looks to be exactly what you want to do. You will just have to wire that horn independantly instead of soldering it to the other one. Otherwise this will work for you I think. Thanks to the author for posting it.

LE,

Thanks for the link. At first glance this looks like a solution to my problem, but after a bit of study I don't think it will work.

I'm wiring and independent horn on here not just adding another button for the one horn. Looking at the pics of what appears to be an even bigger left grip switch housing it does look very cramped.

While it may not work exactly as specified in that link I may be able to glean some ideas to make my install easier.

Thanks,

M7

Just interjecting my 2 cents here ... I installed this portable air horn with black wire tie downs just above the factory front horn and used that horns wires to power it. I then simply unplugged and tapped the rear horn wires. After a couple of test blasts (where I blew out the fuse), I upped the fuse 5 amps and haven't had a problem since. This air horn is as loud as those selling for over $200 in a side-by-side blast-off. And, anytime that I want to return to the factory horns, I'm only a pair of wire snips and minutes away.
