Relocating the Fuel Pump 4 Years, 6 Months ago
|
|
|
Hi,
Can anyone point me in the right direction for relocating my fuel pump? I know I can by kits to move it under the side cover, but I've also read that I'd be better off moving it under the tank (I believe). Anyone? Is there directions posted anywhere that will walk me through this?
Thanks,
Pete

The directions for moving it under your side cover are under our articles section, in carbs/intake. But this doesn't need much in the way of directions. Go out and buy about 4 to 6 ' of 5/16ths fuel line, a new gas filter (or reuse your old one), about six good 5/16" hose clamps, then drain your lines (run the bike with the petcock off) and start going to town. I have had mine under the tank (along the back bone) and found it made a lot of noise there. But some who have mounted it vertically right behind the key tower have had more luck
You can literally strap it on to something with some good plastic straps, or fabricate a mount. I have seen it done both ways. I strapped mine down.
I currently have it under my side cover. But that is because I ran out of patience with trying to fit it under my tank. There are others who have succeeded and could help more on that one.

I've done the relocation to under the side cover as in the articles section...and everything went smooth as silk.
Good luck

Try it under the side cover, I think you will like it. If you live in a wet area, you might want to make aweek hole in the rubber boot of the fuel pump, that has been about the only problem that people have experienced. It can accumulate moisture, and corrode the contacts if it does not have a drainage path.

I put mine under gas tank. Only took about 1 hour to do this. Wraped it in foam rubber so I wouldnt get vibration to gas tank. You can modify original braket to mount choke on. It looks and works great.

I mounted mine under the tank on the backbone. I wrapped it in a piece of inner tube to isolate it from some of the vibration, and mounted the fuel filter on top of the existing fuel pump bracket. I had cut the lower portion of that bracket off just below the highest hole, and used that hole as the new choke mount (I cut a slot just under the hole to slide the choke wire up through it). I was able to re-use part of the existing tubing between the filter and the petcock - the part that is bent almost 180 degrees - it reached perfectly, and re-used the wire loom to help prevent it from kinking.
Worked out great.

WOW.... after reading this I really feel bad for Gram and the rest of the old timers on here.
Its the same questions year after year, this is a post from over 4 years ago and it could have been yesterday.
I don't know how you and the rest of the MOD's do it, stay sane and not just want to choke us for asking the same questions over and over and over and over.......

Mine is behind the right side cover under seat. It came that way and I have had no problem with it there. Things are a little tight in there since I have been WORKING on her alot
I am considering eliminating the pump altogether.
Has anyone done this??
What considerations have to be made?? Problems??

See what I mean? 4 years ago and you can bump it to the top and get right back into it...
I took my fuel pump off after following the instructions of the RSC

Works like a champ!!
I can't believe I am responding to this...... 4 years old this post.
