Manifold Install question 1 Year ago
|
|
I am going to be installing a new ported manifold after work today. I was planning on picking up some Hylomar gasket seal on the way home but then I was reading the tech article on installing the Nemisis manifold and the author specifically said do not use Hylomar use vasoline. Is there an advantage to doing one or the other or is it just a personal preference thing?

The nemesis is an aluminun manifold. As far as the vaseline goes it is to hold the O-rings in place. You will probably want to use that trick as well when installing your new manifold

Nemesis is cast = no flex. Stock is rubber with strategic metal placement = flex. Because of that the Hylomar flexes with the manifold while retaining a seal. Nemesis theoretically sits tight and don't require such a seal IMO. Used a thin film of high temp grease to hold the O-rings in on my 03'. Curt's the pro on this one though.

You'll wanna be careful though eddie. Roadkill had himself stuck to the manifold, bike, and the floor all at the same time a few weeks ago, when the Hylomar got away from him...or maybe I should say, 'didn't get away from him'.

Use vasoline in the O-ring grove to hold the O-rings in place. Put a small bead of Hylomar around the OUTSIDE of the O-rings on the mounting flange. Use flat washers on the 4 bolts to spread the torque over a wider area and tighten them a little at a time in an X pattern after you have them finger tight. (8.7 ft lbs)

Vaseline was used on the Nemisis manifold because they are such a tight fit. The vaseline helped when you had the force the manifold down to install the bolts. The o-rings were a nice tight fit in that manifold so there was nothing needed to keep them in place.
